I drive a Mazda RX-8 and I love it. It has suicide doors so it works perfectly with a fold-up wheelchair. I have the drivers-side rear bucket-seat removed (so I have room for my chair) and I transfer into my driver seat, open the suicide door, fold up my chair and pull it in and shut the door. Total of about 15 seconds. Sweet.

I've been through assorted Mustangs, Corvettes and other sports cars but those might be a bit hard to find where you are. My M3 (pictured) is simple to get me and the chair into.

Posted Image

A guy I see at a lot of car events recently bought this Ferrari and installed the hand controls himself (monarchs), didn't watch him put his chair in it but it must be possible.

Ive posted this a few times. If you are looking for a car that is easy to get into and is capable of being fun i recommend the MRK5 Volkswagen GOLF, GTI, or R32. It is a small car yes but very capable. The two door version has a very wide opening door. it is just shy of 90 Degrees. The GTI and the R32 also run the DSG transmission. Something similar to the e46 m3. The transmission is automatic but with the control of a manual. basically it is because the trans runs two automatic clutches. One to control gears 1,3,5 the second is 2,4,6, and R. I don't know what hand controls you will be using but depending on the setup you are in full control of the vehicle. the nice part about it is if you are driving either by yourself or with others you can still have a full boat. Meaning if you are capable of breaking down your chair and making yourself independent you can keep the chair in the back seat. If you have all seats filled with people you can have someone break down the chair and still be able to fit it in the hatch area. Here is the thing. Most golfs and GTI's have cloth manual seats. only the special edition GTI Fahrenheit and the R32 have a power drivers seat. however i am fully capable of maneuvering the seat by my self. The car itself out of the box for a GTI is a 14 second car but it drives like a go-kart. the other nice thing about the GTI and R32 is the steering wheel is not perfectly round. they used a racing style wheel with the bottom flat so you will have more room to position your feet. hope this helps.

I'm surprised at what you say about Astons - A para friend of mine has a DB9 which he uses as an every day car and is fine.

I can personally recommend a Jag XKR - bit quicker than a DB9 and more reliable. I can get in and out of it fine and the bonus is the boot is big enough for my chair as well as being able to get it inside the car.

If you want something quicker, cheaper and easier to get in out have you looked at a Nissan GTR (just lacks the class of the Aston or the Jag)

DSC_0247.JPG

You do know that adapting doors to open wider is a standard adaption that almost any hand control company will be able to do at the same time as installing the hand controls ?

Yes it's mine and it's a weekend toy :) It's the 5 litre supercharged, I get 19/20 generally from it, 23/24 on a run if I keep to 80, hammering it round the B roads it can drop to 11! Not quite on motability but I did get it VAT free at 11 months old so was a bit of a steal :)
