With no finger function, the type of cc swipers on the pump are impossible...ive never gotten far enough to attempt the lever on the nozzle. I just fill up b4 I get to near empty, so no chance of getting stuck.

well today i needed gas and i had just read this topic. i drove through 2 stations looking for someone who could help then decided "why not just give it a try".so i swiped my card and read the directions and low and behold i filled my tank myself and it was the first time i've done it in 25 years.

it felt good that i was able to do this and i didn't get wet or have an issues.

that's another 1st for me.

Well I glad you finally bit the bullet and did it! :) Good for you! I have to say, though, I am a bit amazed that you have lived twenty five years of your life without even attempting, or thinking you could, get your own gas for your car. What good is life if you are too scared to live it?

honestly, i've never known of a para or quad pumping their own gas. i also usually have one of my daughters or my husband pump my gas. i also have lived all these years in town with a full service gas station and they always run up and start pumping when they see me. what has changed is that the station underwent renovations and now you pay inside. also i'm a girl and a quad and i've never been expected to do it plus i always thought i'd get gas all over me.

i probably won't start making a habit of getting my own gas but if i don't have a pumper in the future i'll just handle it.

mellowgator

I've never done anything but pump my own gas, I've never even thought about having someone else do it for me, it never even occurred to me. For one, I think it is smart to be able to at least know how to pump your own gas, because you never know when you are going to have no one else but yourself to depend on. So it's good that you have that "under your belt" now. ;)

She got it done, thats what matters. Its not always "HOW" as we ALL know.

Karen.. I'm not in the habit of pumping my own gas, nor do I ever care to be either!

Well, Ches, no surprise with a face like yours. I'm sure the boys line up to do it for you. :dev:

I never pump my own gas. However, I have just started driving, but still.

I have not known of any para's who don't fuel up themselves. For any para, it will take less than a minute to have the chair assembled and ass placed upon it, it might not be so at first, but with practice, it will, of course, age is a factor in relation to time.
What I have found funny over the years is; Just at the point when my hand is down my jeans to arrange the crown jewels while on the chair, it is at that point when most come to me and ask if I need help!!

Huh, that's funny. One person in this thread (you) has never known any para who hasn't gotten there own gas, while another person in this thread (mellowgator) has never known any para who has gotten there own gas. Interesting.

I'm fortunate enough to have a few friends that work in this Travel Center, that includes gas and a Starbucks..

By law (in the U.S.) IF the gas station has 2(+) attendants working, they are required to help. I suppose in a worst case scenario you could just pull up to a station, call inside.. or roll inside and ask.. Or hit up one of the people pumping gas!

Might I just add, I HATE those pay at the pump machines, I cant reach nor read the screen.. I suck at pumping gas too, I always end up spilling it all over myself - I dont have the flow down yet.
(bolding mine)

I feel ya there! They put them up so freakin' high! WTF!

Anyway, yeah I pump my own gas. Other than the "pay at the pump" machine idiocy, I really have no trouble. I've never noticed anyone giving me looks or anything. I've seen those handicap signs telling me I could just honk my horn and the attendant would come and pump my gas but I always thought that was silly. For me, at least.

Same here, I'm not gonna be the "special" guy that honks all the time, lol....

It does take 2 or 3 minutes to get my chair out, but I've never noticed anyone pitchin' a fit either. Besides, it's nice to get out and roll around, especially on long trips....

I have the phone numbers for several gas stations within my admittedly limited traveling area, and I phone for assistance - usually the attendant sends a coworker out but several times another customer has volunteered! I just make sure I never let the tank get below 1/4 and always check it as I pass the last station on my way home.

I live in Oregon, which for some reason pumping your own fuel is deemed dangerous and illegal!!

so every station is full service!!

kinda funny.. when I pay with cash, they want me to take it inside to pay.. the attendants aren't ALLOWED to take your money unless you're disabled..
they say "cash goes inside" and start to walk away... "Im disabled" I reply (I hate having to say that every time i buy fuel.. but whatever)
sometimes I have to show them my disabled permit, and sometimes they just stare at me, trying to decide if I'm lying or not..

one time the guy refused, saying he KNEW I wasn't disabled.. I got in my chair, and went inside, and *accidentally* knocked over a bunch of stuff in the store on my way in, and out...

LOL life's little pleasures!!

Ches
When you put the nozzle in, push it down and start pulling it out. The nozzle will catch on something. Wiggle it back and forth a little to make sure it seals, then put it on the lowest flow setting and let your tank fill up.

I pump my own gas. I get tired waiting. Who knows if there are two attendants than don't see you or just one who doesn't have to serve you. I always go to the same gas station. I have a van that has a lift. So I have to have a place that I can let out the lift without blocking all the pumps.

Honk the horn, or wave :-)Somebody normally sees me. I use Sainsbury's most of the time for fuel, it's got to the stage where they often see me driving in and come out automatically to fill my van up because I can't do it myself.
