Hi everyone my name is terry and i don't have a spinal cord injury but i am an above the knee amputee, i have a prosthesis but i can't wear it because my right leg is in poor shape (the good leg) i can drive and i have a car but i haven't figured out how to get my wheelchair in and out of the car (either back seat or trunk) while balancing on crutches and trying to wrestle with the wheelchair, 1 false move and i am on the ground without the ability to get back up because my right leg is too weak to lift me up from the ground,so i have my sister take me to doctors appointments and such which puts a lot on her shoulders, if i could figure out a fairly safe way to handle the wheelchair i could be more self sufficient, is there anybody out there with similar conditions? does anybody have any ideas that could help me?ant ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for that video! It's exactly what I do except I haven't made adjustments to the driver's seat. I now see how that will help when I want to put me chair in the backseat and not just beside me. Eureka!

I notice a lot of people seem to flip the chair up like that and then let it bang down as they take the wheels off. I find it works much better to have the chair lean on the sill.

Electric Memory Seats - wouldn't drive a car without them now! :) One setting for driving, another for getting chair in/out. One of my cars I get both feet in and brace my shoulder against the door pillar as I lean out to dissemble/assemble the chair, the other I have one foot in one foot out as it stabilises me as the door is much bigger (2 door) and I can't brace against the door pillar.

My chair takes a beating, putting it together is way worse than taking it apart! Im so glad I didnt pay extra for a polished finish!

It's not possible now, but years ago when cars had bench seats in front instead of bucket-seats with a console between them, many paras used to transfer in on the passenger side. Then they'd slide over a bit and break down the chair and pull it into the passenger section of the front seat before they slid over behind the wheel. I'm talking about the mid-60s to the 70s.
