http://www.thestandingcompany.com/.

Thought I would share this with everyone, I got to try this out a few weeks ago, and really liked. Its a wheelchair that allows a person to stand up, they make power ones as well, along with manuel. I think it would be great for anyone because it allows you to stand and reach things, along with being able to put weight on their legs. They are located in Detroit, while I dont know if insurances would pay for it, I seemed to really like it.

Yeah they're alright but static weight-bearing (as in simply standing) does not improve bone-density; and this is the primary reason I would want to use a standing chair.

Thank you so much for posting the staanding wheelchair information! I just sent my contact info. and look forward to hearing from them soon. I have only been in a chair for 4 and 1/2 years and yet some mornings I just look it and can hardly manage to get up and "sit". Being upright occasionally would make a world of difference to me. Thank you again.

I just clicked back to the page with the original post and saw my name or status or something listed as Lurker. I am not very computer savvy and perhaps have done something wrong, but if the term lurker means I am not seriously looking for information/advice/help that is not the case. Please let me know what to do differently. Today was one of those bad news days and I really don't want to feel rejected here even though it is not up close and personal. Thank you very much for your help. Sincerely, Susan

Oh theres nothing wrong with being a lurker.
After you have made a certain number of posts your status will change pretty quickly. I'm not sure how many you have to make, someone will fill you in.
Don't worry you haven't done anything wrong.

I agree though, the term lurker does have negative connotations. I picture some creepy old guy hanging around public toilets, I'm sure you're not one of those.....are you?

Perhaps another term like 'browser' or something.

Thank you for clarifying to clue me in. Yes, BROWSER would be a much more accurate term in my case. I so appreciate the information that comes out of the conversations posted in these forums. I have rarely responded to any as I really am "Just Learning". Thank you ALL.

How can you say standing does not improve bone density? The more weight you put on your long bones the stronger your bones get!

i have a standing wheelchair and it is great as I have not had to adapt my kitchen at all. A standing frame will give you a better stretch unless you adjust the backrest of the wheelchair; do this with assistance from a physio or someone who knows how you should be standing bio-mechanically so to avoid injury. I love mine :)

I got my standing chair for many reasons… and it has helped on all accounts. I got no UTIs, less spasticity, and better bowel regularity since I have been standing. Those have been a slam dunk. Gravity really works.
But what I really like the best… is different quality of life. I can do more for myself. I can talk to others eye to eye and people aren’t bowing down to me and I’m not looking up at the dam sky. Heck, I just put new wiper blades on my van myself… I didn’t need help. I got my own workshop and can reach tools and actually use my work bench.
What I don’t always like is the attention I get (ha-ha; joking here!) when I stand up quickly at Target or Walmart…people want me to explain how can get up so easy. If I am rushed it sometimes can be irritating answering all the questions.
Seriously however, what I especially didn’t like is that I had to find out myself the hard way. I went to a big and famus rehab center and they didn’t tell me anything about how it is possible to stand quick and easy every day. I am pissed at them. They put me in useless braces. Ugh. Those are now used as a hat rack.
Standing chairs may be expensive but I wouldn’t go back to just sitting all day for a million bucks.

A question for those who have standing wheelchairs. What brand/model do you have and why did you choose it over the others? Is it power or manually operated?

I've seen the Permobil and the Redman and I guess my main concern is they're not cheap. I think it would take me a long time to get my money's worth out of one. I could see me using it for a few things around the house and I think it would also come in handy at a concert, or other public event, for seeing over the crowd.

mine is a Levo with a manual mechanism. I use mine in my kitchen for preparing and cooking food as well as washing up. I know it sounds like I love chores; believe me I don't really but I do love my independence and I love working the health benefits of standing as mentioned above in to simple daily routine. The improvement to my BP has changed my life believe it or not as I get reduced pain levels too. I also work out with weights whilst standing. Umm what else, Eating whilst standing. On my list of things to do is get a breakfast bar in my kitchen so I can stand and eat.
