Instructability Course at Aspire

Aspire's next Instructability course starts in February! If you are interested in becoming a fitness instructor then email them!

Aspire recently carried out research, looking at disability and the fitness industry, which showed that there was a definite need for better training around inclusive fitness. It was clear that disabled people often feel more confident when there are disabled fitness instructors in their gym and that disabled people wishing to become fitness instructors faced obstacles and discrimination when applying for roles in the fitness industry.

You must be 16 and over, disabled, unemployed, live in a London Borough and have some experience of gym equipment to qualify. The course is free so what are you waiting for?

Shame it's only for people who are from the London area. But even so I won't be able to make it anyway due to my shoulder problem. I've always thought about going into this kind of industry since my accident but have been kinda put off by some gyms and equipment for disabled people, only some gyms have specialist equipment like "Slide away seats" for some machines like the "Butterfly machine" etc, plus some people who have disabilities are too scared to work out, transfer onto certain equipment in front of Able bodied people. Even training AB's you could get into situations where you can't help them on certain exercises, like "Spotting" someone on a weight bench etc,Obviously you could train people doing certain types of exercises instead but still a great career to get into, my Brother has been a personal trainer for over 10 years, great money, helping people achieve their goals is a great satisfaction when you see the work you put in to help them, meeting new faces, more money lol and if you're in that industry you'll most probably be in good health too.

Looks like i need to get this shoulder sorted, doesn't it.

Good luck to anyone who takes this opportunity up, it sounds great.

While I am not in London (I am in US), this program sounds exactly like what I have thought is perfectly suited for myself. I love being able to figure out ways of training and working out from the vantage point of a wheelchair that otherwise may be off-limits or inaccessible. Even the best, most highly trained AB personal trainer often can't take that knowledge and experience and translate it into knowledge that works for wheelchair users.

I wish this was available in the US. I would be a great fitness instructor/personal trainer, but I can't get my certification because I am unable to demonstrate everything to the board that gives out certs.
