I want to start a nonprofit that will help outdoor enthusiast get the equipment they need to get back to the good life. It will be called Project Life Flight. The problem is I have zero experience in the business world. I plan to go to school in August in Missoula, Montana for business, with a focus on nonprofits. I would like to get things started before that. I have a documentary that I am creating about my story that I want to go through the nonprofit. So before I can start to raise money for the production of this film I need the nonprofit to be established. I am looking for anyone that would like to get involved, share some advise, or anything at all that could help steer me in the right direction. Thank you in advance for any hep you may be able to provide.

Hey Joe...Ive dabbled in the idea of non profits. The advice that I was given is to work with an established org. that is similar in structure to the one you want to do first in order to learn what needs to be done (budget, finding board members, drawing up bylaws, etc). Getting started is so much more involved than I imagined, ie setting up the tax exemption and getting out on the donation hunt. But once you get yours going it should become simplified and a good cause, but loads of homework/early preperation will pay off in the final product. Good luck!

My best advice given I have worked as a grant writer for non-profits is do your research on what else is out there providing the same service you want to provide. Just like in business, know your competition and find out what makes their product saleable. The non-profits that make it and become winners are those that offer something that no-one else offers. So start putting together your business plan so you can attract the right board members and funders. Good Luck.
