Looks like a very interesting TV program, great pictures photo shoot in any case.

"As any aspiring actor will no doubt testify, carving a career in Hollywood is tough. So imagine the challenge if a hopeful were paralysed and confined to a wheelchair.

A new show based on just that scenario is set to be the next big thing in reality TV.

Push Girls, which will air on the Sundance Channel in April, follows the personal lives of four wheelchair-bound women as they negotiate familiar struggles from motherhood to relationship break-ups."

Anyone else not thrilled to see this show come out?
I dont mind them making a show about us female wheelchair users I just wish they would have used women who was more down to earth. Instead I feel like it will turn out to be like the Kardashians. I really dont like shows like that. But based on comments I have read us regular wheelchair women are to boring for tv.
Am I the only one to feel this why?
PS Hannibal what does the Office have to do with this post? sorry I got lost reading you comment.

Just from looking at their pictures, I was amazed at their outfits and shoes. Unfortunately, my days wearing high heels are over. I kick 'em off with my spasms. I wish I could put together some of those clothes but the time involved getting them on...not worth it. However, I'm sure they have a lot of help with hair, makeup and clothes...wish I could borrow them a few times a week. It should be interesting to see....we'll see!!!

You're right Denna but I think Hollywood/the industry can only deviate so far from their "ideal plastic fantastic" totally unrealistic character before all the casting folks and producers just spontaneously combust!

I know fish net stockings and high heels aren't exactly what anyone wears doing the weekly shop, whether in a chair or not, but at least the photos show we don't all wear tracky bottoms and have tartan blankets to go out in.

I think regular lives, regular women etc all always seen as too boring for TV producers hence the popularity of reality shows with exagerated everything. Everything is a major disaster to keep the TV watchers in suspense through the ad breaks.

I dont have cable/sky so have been fortunate to have never even seen an advert for the Kardashians to comment.

I made the mistake of reading the comments... one person talking about their friend paralysed from the waist down who can't eat without help, cannot speak and is completely dependent on caregivers. I'm not saying that doesn't happen but the commenter made it sound like those things were the result of being paralyzed from the waist down and the average para is dependent on caregivers. Then of course there's the comments about having things (presumably that people with disabilities are people) shoved down their throats. And you can't have something like that without the person complaining about anyone with a disability being nothing but a lazy bum who is leeching off government assistance. Bleh.

I think to us it's easy to critique the details, that the women aren't average everyday women and their plights probably aren't similar to what the average person in the wheelchair goes through (though I have to say, what is the average wheelchair user then?). Or it could be thinking it's exploitative of people who use wheelchairs or that they'll gloss over the less sexy parts of being in wheelchair (cathing, pressure sores, etc.)... I'm not saying these things aren't true, I just think, especially based on the comments, maybe something like this is necessary. The average AB person is still wildly ignorant about individuals who use wheelchairs, particularly because of paralysis. When it comes to women, many think they can't be assertive or sexy or work in entertainment, etc. While I'm sure there will be the standard reality show trash, maybe it's good to show that women in wheelchairs have agency. Also, they can be trashy reality stars just like any other AB person. Just a thought.

Just what the tv doesn't need another far from reality show that focuses on looks and drama. Wheelchair or not it's all the same "follow the pretty people" please do your self a favor and turn your tv off and pay attention to real life a bit more and take the time to help someone in need. Any help no matter how small can litteraly change someones life for the better. Be the change you want to see in the world!

KayDub I didnt mean for it to sound like I said theres an average wheelchair user and an non average wheelchair user. I just ment I wished they used average women. I guess I choose my words wrong. Which is my bad. I know everyone has their own problems and different things they do in life.
I talked with someone who has meet one of the girls and she says that the girl is one of those if your not walking then that means you are not praying hard enough. I personally believe that just because you pray for it doesnt mean God will grant it. But I really dont want to make this a discussion about religion. I just wanted to show how non down to earth some of the girls are. I will probably watch it just out of curiosity but I probably wont last for the second session.

Oh don't worry, I wasn't trying to sound like I was taking a shot at you. I just thought I'd throw out another view. I don't know if I subscribe to it myself, I don't watch or like any reality TV (okay that's a lie, I like Chopped lol). I totally agree with you about the not lasting long thing!

So wait, the girl on the wheelchair girl reality show thinks you're not praying hard enough if you're not walking? Absolutely crazy. :shakes head:

it won't last long, it'll cost them to much to make it when they have to hire 50 RN's to take care of them and change their poopy diapers and peeing on themselves a half dozen times a day.....but all joking aside, what's it's purpose, what do they gain out of a show like this, obviously won't show how we all have to live, we don't live in million dollar homes or have someone clean and cook for us like they show all these other reality crap shows, their always in these unrealistic settings, its so obvious it practically joking..........hollywood, man they sure need some new talent............they'll paint us in a rosy picture that is no where near reality........

My question is, why didn't they hire some of the hotties here like Leah C, Beautiful or Twisted Ophelia? Seriously, those babes are hotter than the ones on the show.

On a side note, I'd watch out of curiousity. I don't care so much that it's "following the pretty people". For most of the population, they have absolutely no clue what our lives entail. Yeah, yeah it's reality-TV, and it stinks, it's still going to expose a few to the life of those who suffer from paralysis. Better than nothin.
3 doctors diagnosed me with hysterical paralysis (weee!), 1 diagnosed an incomplete T7, another T2 and the last (and most accurate) T5. Trampolines are BAD. Sleep is unpredictable. And never kiss strangers. Life has moved on.

true, black sheep, but it wont show the hard side of life we live, won't be glamorous enough, it'll show the easy part, the partying and out clubbing.........we'll see.....when does it start anyone know?

but what do i know, i thought reality TV would never make it 2 years, now its a crazy phenomenon, everybody wants to air their laundry on a TV show for 30 minutes of fame........

You're right but I think our own beauties are far to smart and not in need of the sycophantic behaviour that will fill and follow this show to prostitute themselves in this way.
I have to admit I will probably watch the "plastic fantastic" hollywood crips just to see what it's like!

Just a few things spring to mind all!

IT IS TV! NOT REAL LIFE!! lol

Was watching a rerun of ER the other day. Now life in that hospital is a nightmare! But to get Joe/Jane public interested that is how TV works. no??

So 4 "babes" in cool wheelchairs, high heels, etc............... Sex in the city???? reincarnated to fill hours of TV??

If a TV showed the "reality" of our daily lives. Get up, have breakfast, wander into town to get groceries, cook lunch, walk the dog, watch TV in the evenin g go to the pub with friends ..... etc, etc ....... would anyone watch episode two???

I think you have to take these shows tongue in cheek.

As regards the comments under the article!!

finally, women in wheelchairs are getting recognized as sexy. i think it's about time women in wheelchairs get shown as something besides an invalid. speaking as a sexy woman in a wheelchair, if they do their jobs right, eventually you won't even see the wheelchair anymore. i'm looking forward to watching this show, to see just how in depth they get into wheelchair life.

Somehow it isn't surprising that you're alone. This is an outstandingly selfish and objectionable comment. And have you even noticed that this is a US show?

Several years ago, a friend of a friend, was paralyzed from the waist down, limiting her ability to speak, eat, use the toilet, etc. Her mind was the same, as sharp as ever, but she was completely reliant upon carers. At first, we all rallied about, helping when she came to visit, carrying her to the loo and cleaning her up afterward. I did this on several occasions when no one else was about, and I was very uncomfortable with it. I have no such training and have never had children, nephews or nieces, it did come naturally, but it still felt strange to me. When we went out, which she 'demanded', we’d carry her (not a problem for me) we'd move tables and chairs about, and people sometimes became angry with us. She was stubborn and would make the servers be patient while she painstakingly ordered her food, it took ages. After a while, I realized I’d never liked her before her accident, so I stopped going out when she came with the group..... I’m guilty of something, aren't I ?
