After all the recent discussion about coffee and my shameful admission I use instant I am looking for suggestions as to what is a good machine to make real coffee.
Basic requirements -
Makes 1 big mugful of coffee
I drink black coffee
I don't want to be washing up lots of bits every time I have a cup!
Possibly could be operated safely by my kids. 9 and 11.

Educate me people please, if I'm going to be stuck in bed for a bit I might as well enjoy a good mug when I'm turning.

I have the Phillips Senseo coffee machine it is easy to use and the coffee bags make no mess at all, just pop one in the top close the lid, hit the button and coffee comes out! I put all the bits in the dishwasher once a week and empty the drip tray as and when. It does have a habit of dribbling coffee once it's switched off and if you drink lots of coffee the refills could get expensive.
If I fall out of my wheelchair in the woods would anybody hear me?

I have a BREWSTATION and love it! In fact I have 2, I use 1 JUST for coffee and 1 for hot water for tea. Super easy to use and clean. It would be perfect to use beside your bed. You can put the water in along with the coffee and then just press 1 button whenever you're ready...can be programmed for a certain time. You just grab your cup and press your cup up to the machine. Super easy to use. GREAT for a quad. NO hot pots to lift to get your coffee. Can make up to 12 cups of coffee. It'll turn itself off in 2 hours. I have pressed the button for another 2 hours without getting the burnt coffee taste.

I believe it's made by Hamilton Beach

110volt supply only. The BREWSTATION doesn't appear to be available in the UK. (At least, I couldn't find one.)

Stay away from De Longi, I got one in December and am literally waiting for the courier to come and collect it to take it back! Started of great then leaked like a bitch!

I love great coffee - Italian style!

Senseo has a good reputation.

This is mine - Saeco, one of the best companies:

Saeco Odea

Super great coffee - but perhaps pad machines are easier to use.

Enjoy, Colin!

I am old fashioned girl. My husband and I ADORE our percolator. If you use a filter there shouldn't be bits. The basket can be tossed in the dishwasher once in a blue moon. The best way to clean a percolator is with a tablespoon of dry dishwasher powder in the basket once or twice a year, then flush with a few brews of cool water. I ADORE my percolator...infact I have two.

If you don't like a percolator, try a small dorm sized (2-4 cup) Mr. Coffee or Braun. I had a Braun for nearly 10 years with few problems. The main ones were...idiots (me and my husband) didn't close the front flap door all the way. The best way around that problem is to find one where the basket drops in the top.

The biggest problem with the K cups and Senseo are the cost of the individual packs. They do sell a K cup personal filter for about $15 USD so you can use your own coffee.

Sorry I yammered a bit. I really REALLY like coffee.

Second that Trin. Mind you the steamer pipe was ideal for un-glueing old joints for furniture etc restoration. Posted Image

I use a Bodum cafetiere [attachment=12582:bodum.jpg]

Makes great coffee (Costa Italian Blend), Not really suitable for young children, I'm afraid. Sorry I couldn't help.

Sorry to hear you are stuck in bed ( I always enjoy reading your posts, and appreciate your views ) I am a cafetiere fan too. Is your 11 year old allowed to use a kettle or could you have a tray with everything ready by your bed ? The advantage is simplicity, easy to clean, and takes any blend of coffee.........of course being in Yorkshire it has to be Taylors of Harrogate coffee for me !

I second this. I've had one of these for years and they're great. You can also get a mesh insert that allows you to use your own coffee instead of the k-cups, but they're a little bit of a pain to clean. I prefer the convenience of the throwaway cups.

Well now I've seen some of your suggestions I need to consider what I may choose as my solution. One choice I know for sure I'll not be making is for my solution to be Maureen, no offence GB, commuting to Scotland just to make coffee seems an unreasonable request.

I gotta say, FINALLY a thread worth posting in! lol

I've actually been around the block with all these du-hickies and there's one thing I've come to realize . . . they all make COFFEE.

It all boils down really (eh, eh?) to wha'chur budget's like. If ya got money t' burn, get Jenn's Saeco. Yur talkin' maybe $700-1,000.00 on up) dependin' on the bells & whistles, like temperature control . . . that's a doozy, an self grinder complete with used waste bin. But, I'd make sure it has a teemperature control, cuz my Saeco lost it's heat after just under 10 years.

Now, if'n it's a no muss, no fuss deally-o, try them pod thing-a-ma-giggers, like the Senseo or the Kierig. Just a note, Senseo has the option of double strength, or pouring two cups regular strength at once, and the Keirig is a single serve deal. Also, while the Senseo makes this really nice le creme (Italian), foam on top, the K-cup doesn't. And, Senseo pods are half the price. Now, all that bein' said, Kierig is real hot right now (on the market, that is), so there are a ton more variety's to choose from. While sadly, my lil' ol' Saeko is gettin' harder to find pods for. Just this month, none of the local stores carry Saeco pods anymore, so I've resorted to getting them online exclusively.

I just bought that Hamilton Beach, no pot needed, machine. It works well. But I sure do miss that foamy stuff on top, an' I AIN'T talkin' bout crappochino's neither!

Glad I could help!

I've been using a kuerig for the last year, its had some issues but overall works really well for quick coffee, only big problem is the price of the kups it works out to $54 per pound of coffee!
A big price to pay for the convenience, once mine breaks im going back to a percolator.
