another antibotic i keep going through different antibotics and none of them seem to work and if they do work its only for a short period of time and then i have reacurring uit's all over again. Any suggestions on how to get rid of uti's for any period of time besides a couple of weeks. What happens when you have gone through all the different types of oral antibotics that kill the bacteria. I get self cathed if that helps any and could as well be a big problem. Any suggesions would be greatly appreciated thank you.

The first thing that popped into my head was....Are they sending a sample to be tested for the right antibiotics for your infection? I have had doctors who prescribe an antibiotic without doing a culture. NOT a good idea when you have lots of UTIs. Ask what kind of bacteria you're having and if it's the same one each time.

I take D-Mannose as a preventative and have good results. I also drink lots of water. I know others who use "flushes" to wash out their bladder.

Oh yea, welcome to the forum. You can find lots of old threads on this subject by doing a search. It might benefit you to read a few . Never can tell when something might pop out at you.

good luck

Welcome Clair Bear,
Self cathing is actually better than an indwelling, as long as you use a new catheter every time, and keep everything clean.
When I first started out, I had a caregiver cathing me at night. When I noticed her putting the newly opened catheter in the urinal container to carry it over to me, I knew that wasn't appropriate. Just be aware of how people do things around you. ( ie.make sure they wash their hands and wear gloves). You are your own advocate when it comes to your health.

That said, the culture test was talked about, and that needs to be done to treat the right strain of infection. It also needs to be treated long enough. None of this 2-3 days of antibiotics crap, but a solid 2 weeks, twice a day of the right antibiotic treatment. If you've been going through your primary doctor for treatment so far, I recommend getting a referral to a urologist. They do a better job at treating UTI's and are also far better equipped at preventative measures in the future. Good luck.

Hello Claire B.,

I had constant uti's for about 43 years. In August, 2010 I started using a product, 20 ml of Microcyn, in my bladder 3 times per week and have not had a uti since. It will kill all germs, bacteria, virus' (including HIV) and MRSA. It can be used anywhere saline can be used and has a ph of 7.0 so it is painless. If you look it up, you too will be amazed at and what this product can do to help you. (I am not affiliated with Oculus, Inc. but love their products.)

Good luck.

Hello there. I was chaired in 07 and have been self cathing ever since. I went through a lot of uti's (sometimes still do) but was always very careful with anti-bots. I have tried to avoid them for all the obvious reasons. I have made the decision to leave them alone untill there is no other choice. I usually know when I have an infection. Sometimes I get a headache, not often. For me the smell is a good indicator. My Doctor told me that unless I have bad symptoms it's best not to take tabs. I took his advise.

I have tried many things, including the stuff you will see in these other threads. I have scoured the web. I have blown loads of money on the "wonder drugs" all of which failed expensivly. Very depressing and demoralising.

I think differently now. I believe in the power of my own body to defend it's self, as I did before the chair.

I eat good heathly fresh/frozen vegetables (broccali makes my pee smell quite nice!!). I take everyday CHEAP multi vitamins. 1000 mg vitamin C a day, the fizzy kind, in a pint glass first thing when I wake up. Loads of liquids, (mostly coffee and tea for me (not advised)) I hear water is good.

Most of all, like I said, its not an issue any more. I don't worry about it. I make sure my hygiene is ok and that's it.
Time was an issue for me at first. I wanted the uti to disappear NOW. I have learnt to be more patient.

Give your body the things it needs to be able to fight, then sit back and relax.

And if all else fails, you have antibiotics to fall back on. I have not used any for more than a year now and counting...

I will have to have a bladder op sometime soon and I will be Zapped with tabs again but over time I'm confident that my body will recover and return to it's normal routines of fighting off bugs. After all it's been doing it for many many thousands of years.

No one has mentioned nitrofurantin, yet. Many of us take it prophilacticly. Generally, 50mg per day is used. It keeps most ecoli down to acceptable levels,, but when you get something else,, you'll know it,, and then you can go to the doctor.

As was said above,, if you don't have a fever of above 102F,, your body can usually kick it on it's own,,, but everybody has a different view on when to go.

hey claire,
some people are more likely to get uti's then others, my advice would be to see a urologist and explain the problem, they should be able to offer sugestions and try out different things. Also are you taking a pro biotic? and also lifestyle factors are something to look at, i personaly find i am more likely to get a uti if i am pushing myself too hard at work or partying too much
hope that helps

hey clairebear,

what are the symptoms do you have? I find that I get symptoms such as headache and voiding a week before my menses; I used to think I had UTIs all the time yet my culture results would return -ve. The uterus is just situated behind the bladder and pain and spasm could be triggering the same responses as UTI especially if you get AD. I monitor my fluid intake, I aim for 1.5l, and drink a shot of cranberry every morning as well as fresh fruit and green tea; oh yes and I cotnrol those menses.

Best of luck
B

Cranberry juice drink every day is a good start.. You can also get urinary alkalinisers (ural, citravescent, mist. pot. cit etc.) that make the pH of the urine so it doesn't encourage bug growth. I also got told that with regular catheter use you will almost certainly end up with colonisation by bacteria, and it only needs treating if symptomatic. What that actually means is different for everyone - sometimes fever, sometimes generally unwell feeling, sometimes more spastic than usual, etc.

If you don't like drinking cranberry juice you should at least be taking some kind of cranberry supplement. I take AZO tablets. As far as how many you should take, you might want to speak with your Dr. I've seen differentiating opinions about this but, caffeine intake could also be causing these. Excess of coffee, tea, soda, ect. I've personally tried going without and still had problems with them so I personally cannot give a fair opinion of this theory.

Have you thought about contacting an infectious disease Dr.? It sounds worse than really is. Try doing some research on the Internet. They may have the answers that maybe your urologist is missing. You may need IV antibiotics to kill whatever keeps attacking your system. This does not necessarily mean you'll be hospitalized. It is possible to do this from home.

This is pretty much all the information I can offer. Hopefully it helps and if not, hopefully someone can! Best of luck!
