Well some of you know this and some dont...that i am in Southport Spinal Unit (finally)

I finally had a referal and a bed came up on the same day as my consultant appointment and assesment, so i was real lucky and came the next day.

This is the most life changing experience of my life..for many reasons.

My bladder and bowel issues are getting sorted, cathing is a joy that im getting better at (slowly lol)...i am getting great physio..in fact its my first session today.
I am recieving councelling and wheelchair skills and relaxation classes....its just amazing.

But......i have met the most wonderful people in here..friends that i will most def have with me for the rest of my life. I didnt ever imagine that rehab would be such fun..ive laughed so much till it hurts..go to the pub often and have such a great time in the evenings with a group of friends im becoming so fond of.

I also appreciate the fact that im an incomplete para so so much and in the scheme of things compared to many in this unit and some of my new friends.i am the fortunate one with so much to be thankful for.

This...... other than the opportunity to learn the skills i need to, to enable me for the future..is also giving me the 'time out' i needed..to collect my thoughts and reflect on so much, where i am in my life and where i am going and where i wanto to be.

Im gona do another post about my first night out with these guys, i laughed till i cried and i just have to share it

I'm glad you're finally getting the help you deserve. The things you'll learn will make your life so much easier. Learn as much as you can and try harder than you think you can. Find your limits and push harder. How long do you think you'll be there?

Once my neck healed and I came to terms with my SCI, I really enjoyed my rehab at Shepherd Spinal Center. It was great going out almost every night. It made easing back into society so much more easier for me. I still keep in contact with a small group of friends and employees that I met while there.

They made me feel so comfortable I didn't want to leave.

I feel you have a huge advantage over others from already learning so much from here. Keep us posted!

Glad it's going well. As Goose said your knowledge from here should help immeasurably. Hope also what you see and experience now will also give you a better insight to all the stuff we have all been posting about.
Good luck, this is the best chance you will get - work bloody hard, they will push you 5% more!

Thankyou for the words of encouragement.....yes i am gaining much insight indeed.

Ive had my first physio session this morn and i am a bit sore.... no pain ...no gain!.also think im going to get some cooking practice here..and i so cant wait to get in the kitchen.

Missed my relaxation class though as my cathing disasters are taking more time than i like

Not sure how long i am here yet, im waiting for my eurodynamics to be done still so at least a few more weeks.

I'm glad your enjoying rehab. It's suppose to be fun and adventerous and a nice learning experience. It sounds like your getting all of that. Just don't show off your wheelie and falling out of your chair on purpose like I did to scare the nurse and laughing about it. :dev: Remember to have fun and enjoy as much as you can.

Don't forget to eat plenty of food there. Mmmmmmm, food. I'm sorry where was I?

Oh and ask for a grabber, you'll have lots of fun with that. Lol

Ahhhh, brings back memory of when I was in rehab.

Anyways, keep having fun in there and make it a positive experience. :)

P.S. This is what a grabber looks like if you don't know what it is. Lots of fun or a useful tool.

Rehab.

A cross between Hogwarts and Colditz!

It took me almost a year post injury to get into Stoke Mandeville, I am mot exaggerating when I day it changed and probably saved my life.

Many non traumatic incompletes still get no proper rehab.

All the best.

Great to hear that you have got into proper spinal unit, the experience they have is second to none and will help you tou make the most of your life. You obviously have the right attitude and the fact that you can make friends and enjoy it too..........well that is what it should be like.

I met some great people when I was in my SIU and still keep in touch with one who has become a good friend, keep us posted, if the social life is that good we will all be queuing up to come and join you !!

Hey,

That's such great news! I hope the experience continues to be a beneficial one for you and you get some more of the best therapy out there, also known as laughter :)

I hope the Urodynamic testing goes well, which I underwent as an outpatient and was really useful when it came to finding out what was going on down there.

Keep us posted on how you're getting on...

DxM :)

As im a wake at silly o clock, i thought i would update you guys.

The rehab has been going great....physio is going really well...and they have managed to get a spark into some of the muscles that were as lazy and work the butt off me so i am def stronger than wen i first came in.

Wheelchair skills.....is a joy....im rubbish at wheelies and i can only get up and down small curbs and slopes but im much better than i was and can wheel about quite happily ..but my hands are sore lol

bladder and bowel...learnt to intermittent catheter (finally got it)..but i have a UTI at the mo which is persistant, im on my second course of anti biotics but it doesent feel like its clearing up.
Bowels.....on meds at the mo and managing to go fine but still got work to do with this.

This morn would have been my first mornin in the pool but ive been on bedrest because of a suspected clot..im having a leg scan in the morn..more joy! The bedrest has been tough...and boring but ive managed to occupy myself with chocs and music

Well....on the whole im loving this experience and learning lots and lots...ive met some truly amazing people who have touched and enriched my life and will def keep in touch with them.

thankyou for the lovely comments and cas ..yes,made it to the pub lol

Sounds like you are having a good time in there. I must say I enjoyed my time in Rehab and am very grateful for all I was taught there. Take care.
