Does anyone remember how they reacted prior to your own injury? I worked as a carry-out at a grocery store and one day a woman in a regular manual chair was checking out. She was with someone and after placing her groceries into her car, I asked her if she needed help with anything else. She transferred into her car and asked if I'd place her chair in the either the back seat or trunk (can't remember which). I did so and went on. I think that most people who ask if they can help aren't doing so out of pity, but more so out of compassion. I would rather have more people ask if I need help than to be rude and/or park in the handicapped parking slots.

I just got hand controls so I'm starting to learn how to take apart and put together my own chair from the car. I find it's really embarrassing though, like everyone is staring. Anyone else dealing with this?

Give it a little time and you want even see the people starring at you, and if they are close enough to you just speak to them that usually set them at ease their just curious. After you get comfortable with putting your chair together in public then start messing with the observers by parking next to a handicapped parking place and when they ask why you didn't park in the handicapped parking place just tell them that's for handicapped people, then their the ones just standing there scratching there head. things that make you go hhmmmmm
Have a Great Day

i use to get embarrassed oh 7 years ago when i first started driving, but not anymore, over time you will become very good at it, and instead of being embarrassed you will feel empowered because it will get to the point where you will be encouraging people and they will be impressed, i speak for experience. i hope this helps
