Im thinking of getting a new car, probably early next year so Im starting to look at whats available. Ive been looking at the motability scheme and wonder how everyone finds it? I mean have you found it works well, do you get good service, do you feel its value for money?

Ive been looking at the motability site and dont find it that useful. Im looking for the biggest vehicle I can get (Me, husband, child, chair 2 dogs) for the smallest deposit. I dont have a huge amount of money to throw at it. Im not that fussy, the only criteria is that I need a higher seat for transfers and obviously hand controls. So does anyone havve any suggestions and are there any alternatives to motability?

thanks
Lucy

Ive had a bad experience with motability and know a few others who have also. Sorry, before i upset anyone again or open any cans here i will refrase. My situation and the others i know about were not problems with the scheme itself, more to do with the garage we used although we did use different garages. I would personally go around the garages and see what they offer because they are all diiferent. I used to many miles with my mobility car but in general if you dont do many miles a year i personaly think its a very good scheme. You can also use you dla/mobility to buy a second hand approved car with a less interest rate and most garages will give you free servicing in this deal. Your welcome to contact me if you want to kn ow the ins and outs of the problems i had with the dealer, not mobility as they were very good.

cheers lee
I do it erratically, often with bits fallling off.

You'll have to pay for hand controls on top of all the prices you see quoted.

Alternatives are Hire purchase, personal contract hire, outright purchase using a bank loan. I'd recommend the last of those and use your DLA payment to fund this. Personally I'd not use Motability unless you are happy with one of the cars with a very low initial payment and really really want the security of having someone else look after absolutely everything for you. Using the alternatives 1 and 3 you at least end up with an asset and can write off the loan over a period greater than 3 years should you wish. Alternative 2 isn't too hot as AFAICT it's not easy to take advantage of the VAT free purchase but I may be wrong as it's not something I've looked into.
