Hey everyone! I want to get some opinions on places to move to. I currently live in Anchorage, AK but really want to move down to the lower 48s. My problem is that my wife and I don't know which state would be best. We need a place that offers good benefits because we both live off of SSI, Section 8, and medicaid. Alaska provides great benefits, but we can't take these cold long winters anymore. So, we would like to move somewhere that offers similar benefits. For example, When we go to the doctor, we only have a co-payment of $3 and a co-payment of $2 for prescriptions. I don't have to pay anything for my supplies (gloves, chux, wipes...) or for any repairs to my chair. Medicaid also pays for just about anything I need as long as I get a doctor's note. Medicaid also pays for my pca services, which is around 35 hrs a week.
Our ultimate goal is to transfer our services to another state where we can finish our Vocational Rehabilitation and begin working so we do not have to rely on these benefits forever.
I sure would appreciate any advice or experiences anyone would share.

Those benefits that you mentioned are a federal benefits. it has nothing to do with what state you live in, just as long as you live in USA.
i live in North Carolina and our Vocational Rehab is pretty good. We have some nice facilities setup through Carolinas Medical Center. we have an adaptive sports program as well. The biggest benefit is that we have all four seasons here. It gets down in the 30-40's in winter and up just barely reaching 100 in the summer.

Boy you really got dumped on this year! Don't blame you for wanting to relocate. My husband and I just bought a place in MT, not because we love the weather but because I get insurance for 1/3 the cost of AK insurance. If not for that I'd stay home as I get really homesick. We plan on spending summers there anyway. Let us know what you decide and good luck w/ the rehab.
