I tried UPS an FEDEX to mail one about 60 miles away. Their websites give you a weight cost, but they also go by Size. They wanted $100 and something US for only 60 miles. Was cheaper driving it there!

I suggest you contact companies such as Europa Worldwide / DHL / RH Freight / Hellmann Logistics / Route 1 Forwarding directly (all companies I use for transport at work). You should be to get the goods cheaper than their online price guidelines will state.
One thing however (I'm presuming it's a manual rather than electric) because of it's size you may find they will state packing for "airfreight" so go crazy with the bubble wrap and cardboard and make sure no sharp edges are showing. They /shouldn't/ be saying it needs to be crated or palletised as its under 20 kg.
Finally - make sure you pay attention when filling in the customs paperwork and be clear to state whether it is new / a gift etc. I know when importing we need to be careful clearing customs as the tax man likes to get involved but I've no idea what it's like for America to receive equipment.
