Hey all I'm going off the College in a few weeks and I'm having to pay for my dorm room. I wanted a small single to cut down on the cost. The reason is I'm over 40 and living with a 18/19 year old wouldn't fit my bill. I can't have a small single I have to take a double that I will use as a single, which cost more. I can see in a way it's Fair I'm not getting a large single I'm getting double and paying for a large single. between medical Devices extra wear and tear on your clothes, hand controls, ramps, how much more does it cost a person with a disability to live?

Sooooooo much depends on your sci level and the amount of "movement" one has, what you need assistance with etc.. I will never be able to live on my own. I'm a c6 and need assisstance in the am and pm plus the bowl programs. What really sucks is that if i chose to do nothing all day and go nowhere but church I could have medicare pay for it all. I now have the trio of medicare, medicaid and vocational rehab. I have not worked since my injury but have been doing the university thing. I do volunteer work and stuff but not any official 9-5.

I have about a year to go 'till I finally get my master's in counceling degree. I've bee a little scared to see how much I will be able to earn until help goes away. I would be willing to work purely pro-bono if that's what it takes. I love the counseling profession and obviously did not get into it for the $$.

Anyway, I think it is different for all of us

Yeah yeah I know the title is a bit philosophical but it's kind of the point. We go on and we are told that everything is a level playing field. Is it? Most disable people even in highly developed nations live poor. I have a friend with MS who has to pay $2500.00 month in perscriptions. In her case it's a literal how much does it cost to live. she eats or get's her medications. Even with prescription drug care, her deductible is 3500 a year she is lucky her partner makes a good living so they are making ends meet. When you go out and your B and B equipment cost more than the Cothes you put on. If i took all the pills that I'm expected to take daily it would cost more then an average lunch. When I get a sore on my ankle it cost me $90.00 in bandages unti it's healed, taking care of it myself. triple that if I go to the doctor. I have to save about 700 dollars a year so I have the money to replace my wheelchair and cushion. This things are not optional these thing are what we need to live like food and water shelter.
