I'm very pleased to inform you that Gerry Breen and I are working on a project to provide flying course etc for disabled people - www.gerrybreen.com.

We're creating a syndicate to purchase a Pioneer 200 and fit it with hand controls - photo attached.

If you're interested in the idea of buying into this syndicate and benefiting from reduced costs to learn to fly as well as low cost flying all year round, then email me and I'll be happy to email you further information on costs and terms & conditions.

Regards
Dave

Wow great idea! No idea how I missed this post... :)

What hand controls are fitted?

Not sure I'd be able to transfer into the cockpit. My transfers arent bad but that looks a bit difficult.

Best of luck with the venture

Hi LadyPilot - Thanks - much appreciated!

The hand controls haven't arrived yet but are being made by the manufacturers of the aircraft. As for getting in and out, I'm going to build a simple yet functional table to transfer from the wheelchair, and raise it on your own, so it's easy to get into the cockpit. I'll post a photo when this has been done.

The owner of the airfield has now also agreed to offer a similar deal on an X-Air, so we'll be fitting this microlight with hand controls also.

I'll keep you posted.

great! count me in! ;)

ladypilot, as soon as i get well with my kidneys i'm going to the middle east, think i have landed a new contract there. and i think it will be profitable for dave's flying biz as well, since i'll spend my money on getting a PPL. ;)

honestly the only thing why i'm sorry for being a quadri is that i can't be get my CPL/ATPL and work as a pilot. my grandpa was a pilot and i have many friends and relatives flying. hey, flying is as exciting as sex! ;) i really can't understand people who're afraid to fly.

anyone has tried to pilot a chopper? think it's kinda easier for disabled.

Yes, it's been done. A guy named Stewart Mcquillan who's a para, learned to fly in California somewhere. Not sure if he was 'ghosted' by second pilot because to fly a helicopter requires both feet and both hands!!!

I hope you get your PPL it's a very satisfying achievement. Good luck and I hope you get well soon.

Here's the connect to read about the para who learned to fly a chopper:
http://www.emediawir.../8/emw75422.htm

Miami, FL (PRWEB) August, 2003 – Stewart McQuillan earned his Private Pilot’s License from the FAA today after being paralyzed for 15 years. McQuillan will fly solo for the first time with his FAA license on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at 10:00am EST at the Helicenter International Academy facilities using a Schweizer 300CB helicopter.

McQuillan, 43, suffered an accident 15 years ago while serving the Royal Air Force that paralyzed him from the waist down. In 1997 he started the development of the AeroLeg, a device he attaches to his legs that connects his feet to the anti-torque pedals of the helicopter (which control torque, the natural tendency of the helicopter to turn in the opposite direction of the blades).

Yes, he was working in a Tornado Aircraft when some idiot opened the brakes on him trapping him and breaking his back.
I can contact him if you want more details about helicopter flying at a later date.

BTW I was a better Glider pilot than him, he won't mind me saying that! :licklips:

Stewart wrote to me and said :

His email adress is aeroleg@hotmail.com

There is also http://www.wheelchairaviators.org/.

That being said, I found this group to be unresponsive (by email) while trying to get back in the cockpit after C5 tetraplegia - ASIA D. For anyone pursuing this in the USA, the Aircraft Owner's and Pilots Association was a great resource for me for obtaining information on medical criteria and Federal Aviation Administration certification processes (see http://www.aopa.org).

If I waana Fly, I'll take some LSD!
