The facilities for SCI in SA are pretty good. The Spinal Unit I was admitted to after my injury was excellent and I haven't yet come across any places that are not wheelchair friendly. The only problem I've encountered thus far, is that the tables in restaurants are usually not high enough for my wheelchair to go underneath.
I think public transport (or rather the lack thereof) for wheelchair users is probably the biggest hurdle here, for even though our Employment Equity Act ensures that there are more job opportunities for the disabled, most of us aren't fortunate enough to have our own transport. Lucky for me, my daddy doesn't mind being my chauffer... don't know what I'll do without him!
Hi Tamzin,
I thought I saw on TV that the surf in South Africa is among the best next to Hawaii or am I all mixed up? That is one of the things I really miss, body surfing...just you and the ocean...nothing else required.
In your profile, by sensory incomplete you mean some sensory function, with little or no motor nerves functioning. Is that not right? Being a little dyslexic I get easily mixed up. It is either that or all the drugs I am on. I myself have some very spotty sensory return down to my chin and calf asymmetrically (S2-3, not sure). My biggest issue is that the sensory return around L3 (I have an L1 burst fracture) has led to a lot of nerve pain. At times I cannot sit when the nerves in the back of my thigh go nuts. For the same reason I cannot have any electrical stimulation to help move the muscles or the legs. It would be extremely painful, excruciatingly so I have been told.
It is a mystery why some nerves cause problems and others do not.

Hi Radar, if you interested in body surfing have alook at http://paraplegicscuba.blogspot.com/ cheers Neil
