hey im just wondering what cushion you have at the moment and what cushion you left hospital on? im still on a roho and have had it all the time and looks like i wont get a different kind like jay 2 etc, i would like to have a more stable kind of cushion if that makes sense, ive seen people who have been in a chair for a long time have different cushions, is this a time thing?

Been using a 4 inch high profile RoHo cushion 30 years without a single sore on my butt. The right air pressure & checking my butt twice a day with a mirror, not taking anyone's word for it has paid off! I sat on a Gel cushion for 1 minute, it hurt so bad due to it being firmer & I having sensation. The original RoHo from 30 years ago is still under my butt, never having had a leak or Hole. I'm told today's RoHo's get leaks or holes easier.

I started out with some crappy jell cushion from Invacare but moved up to a Supracore Stimulite Sport last December. I almost went with a ROHO but needed more stability and I don't regret my decision at all. I LOVE my stimulite and haven't had a sore since I got it but that could also be because I get in and out of my chair so much.

I have a Roho also and I hate it. I'm getting a new chair and I definitely don't want a Roho or any cushion that requires you pump air in it

I too left Rehab on a Roho, but switched after a leak that I was unaware of too late. Now, I sit on a custom from Ride Design. You will have to get a seating evaluation. Best move I've made post injury. The cushion, chair and I feel like a unit.

I have a veralite meridian and have tried a vector and trying to get ins to pay for me to get one. I like that you can customize it but it isn't good for everyone.

I have a Roho, but doubt I'd like it if I self transferred.

Left the hospital 20 years ago on a Jay Active. Also tried Roho and some generic memory foam cushion too. I've used a Jay Extreme for the past 10 years, and I cut them down to 2" thick. Full sensation, never had any pressure problems.

I tried different cushions in rehab and settled on a Roho. That's what I left with and it's what I still use, almost 3 years post. :)

Just so you know "ROHO" is actually like saying "I drive a Chevy.", it's the MAKE. MY ROHO is a "ROHO Quattro HP (High Profile), which is a bunch of air cells that can be inflated or deflated to suite the user's needs.

I left the hospital with just a foam cushion....but this was back in 1990 when "egg crate" shaped foam additions were the OOH LA LA thing.....obviously the ART of arse protection has improved significantly.

I've had a few different kinds; the 1st being just a foam square....did OK but I did end up with a few MINOR sores (a # of "bruising" that would stay for hrs after I'd stopped sitting, a couple of spots about the size of a pimple that broke the skin), with my foam/gel combo we had one particularly humid summer where I ended up with an EXTRA crack in my butt crack which is the only one that has actually landed me on any sort of "bed rest" or time limits on how long I was allowed to sit up & was caused by poor air circulation.

There are a lot of different makers of cusions AND wheelchairs & each make several different models.....so it really depends on YOUR needs & unfortunatly on what kind of funding you can come up with (some insurance companies are willing to spend more than others + how much EXTRA $ you may be able to come up with).
*Enjoy every sunset, but be grateful for every dawn.*
*Wheelchairs are made of a special ocular magnetic alloy......they're "eyeball magnets".*

I started using a RoHo in rehab (25 years ago) but I kept sliding forward. Switched to a Jay cushion before leaving then went to a Jay2. Never had any problems with skin on it. I get mapped before each new purchase. Never have to worry about too much or not enough air like a RoHo...makes life a little more simple. My balance is better on Jay2.

the problem ive got is when i lift forward so my butt is near the end of the chair for transfers etc all the air rushes to the back behind me and i sink at the front kind of almost tipping me out of the chair forwards feeling, i guess if it aint broke dont fix it but i wish i could get a solid cushion and thought it was down to the type of skin you had and thats what you could only use :/

if some one can recommend me cusion which can solve my problem..

I left hospital on a crappy flo-tech which was rubbish but my chair was also too big so together it felt like I'd been dumped into a wheelybin arse first!
In rehab I had a Jay2 which was fine but heavy.
When just after discharge I was reevaluated and got a new chair that fitted I was able to get a Jay Active gel cushion which I liked as it was a gel pocket where you sit but foam around and particularly at the front when you transfer - just as you mention.
I felt like I was slopping around after a while so managed to get a change to a Jay Easy, similar to an active but the front part is sculpted to help keep your thighs in the correct place which I like.
I had a sore on my but in January (not the cushions fault - Airplane seat!) and I was provided with a low profile (2") Roho standard air cushion. First of all it felt like I was at sea since I was not corralled as I had been in the "Easy" but now I've got used to it I really quite like it. I can use either quite comfortably so for now no need to look for a change.
I did ask a similar question my self a while ago and really liked the look of the cushion Trinity uses as I travel a fair bit and punctures of the air or gel pad were a concern but her cushion was made up of lots of independent cells so you can adjust how many you want and, - A Vicair I think.
Good luck on your search but be careful this is in my opinion one of the single most important purchases you will ever make! Do not scrimp on the cost, if you can afford a better cushion then go for it.

i heard ROHO were "the rolls royce of cushions" and ive seen how much they are, i wouldnt scrimp when it comes to my well being, i would just like a nice cushion mainly because of the transferring thing something with abit firmness to it, i know i cant just get a block of sponge and be ok but maybe something inbetween :)

The Jay cushions - Easy and Active are good for that, the only thing I would have liked to change on them would to have made the actual foam thinner by say 10 to 15 mm which would lower the profile of the cushion. They give you more stability I think when pushing around quickly or turning sharply etc. Would be my choice to have a low profile less than 50mm, gell pouch or well filled with the vicair triangular cells, and the front of the foam base curved to hold my thighs on place. Probably find someone makes it and it's really expensive!!

how do you know a cushion is right for you before you buy it, I know you can have a pressure test done but if you buy the cushion and pressure test says it's crap it's a waste of money. Do they usually let you try the cushion before you buy? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Understood. In fact, I drove a Chevy once. I don't remember what kind of Chevy it was and it really doesn't matter, I just remember that I wasn't impressed. Most of us men are like that though, the details don't really matter. If you own a truck no one cares if its a 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton, an extended or super cab, a gas or deisel engine. It's either a Ford, a Chevy or a Dodge.

I have no idea what kind of ROHO I tried, to me they are all cushions made of multiple, adjustable pressure air cells.... ;)

Just - I still am using the same cushion I got with my first (purchased) chair - it's a Jay Easy. Don't really like it, but wheelchair dealer hasn't been able to suggest one that I like better yet. I don't remember if I ever got mapped/pressure tested; maybe that's what I need?

Drunk - Yes, my wheelchair dealer has lent me several cushions to try before buy.

i duno i just got stuffed on this blowy up thing from day one, but then seen others with different solid looking ones and questioned it, i carry a pump in my bag just in case thats something extra to carry around i know its only a pump but if i had a solid cushion i wouldnt need to, tinamarie i would speak to your local wheelchair services or hospital physio to map you just to check and see how you get on and tthey will be able to tell you which cushions may suit your map reading

Justbeingme - did you attend a spinal injuries unit after your injury and if so did they assess that you needed a roho cushion?

It's just that in my experience, it is very unusual to see somebody of your injury level using/prescribed with a roho cushion (at least in the UK) unless they have very bad skin problems.

Incidentally, I left hospital in 1995 on a Jay 2, have used a Jay active since but have been using a Varilite Evolution for the past 10-11 years or so.
