I used to go there rather frequently before my accident. My accident was five years ago and I haven't been there during the entire five years. But then again, even if I wanted to there's no possible way my wheelchair would work on the beach or get me to the beach unless I want to spend a ton of money that I do not have into my chair.
Imagine what I do when I need to laugh or feel better. Imagine a purple hippo standing up straight wearing pink clown shoes and juggling lime green Jell-O squares!

I used to live in Huntington Beach, California. I always thought that was the perfect place and nothing could replace it, until they tightened up the waste laws in the ocean. During the same time I lived just down the street, but I couldn't get in the near bye beach areas, as they were blocked off because the waste measurements were too high in content. Funny thing was, not three life guard towers down, it was perfectly fine to swim.

When it came down to finally buying a house, I just made sure that one large requirement included a swimming pool. After that, the beach seemed to pale in comparison to moonlight skinny dipping and drinking margaritas pool side.

Here in Hawaii on Oahu they have an organization that goes to several different beach spots each month and sets up their water wheelchairs and also lots of volunteers to carry/assit people to the water to go on boogie boards, surf boards etc... I've never gone; got to get up my nerve. The military is involved along with some other people. Oh how I miss the beach and fishing too.

I grew up in Laguna Beach, CA where I had my accident. The beach & going in the water I think saved me. There is something about the ocean salt water that is healing. I live in Florida now & even though I am much older now, I still go in a much as I can. My injury is C6-7 T1, & with limited feeling I was able to go in when the water was cold in CA but it's much better here in FL. The water never got below 73 degrese this winter. Its 81 right now the middle of May & usually get to 86 in the Summer.

i live on an island in florida. the beach is at the end of my street and the river is my back yard. i have a beach wheelchair and the public beach cross overs are ramped. i have a great set up and going to the beach isn't a problem. i have been to resorts like amelia island where they have a beach w-c available. also the florida keys have coquina beaches which are easy to roll on in your w-c. so going to the beach is possible.
hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Never say never! A lot of places have wheelchairs made for the beach and water for rent.

My family regularly visits the Florida coast during the winter months. After several years of frustration of being confined to the sidewalk and not being able to go out on the beach with the rest of my family, I found an Extreme 4 x 4 wheelchair on eBay and have been using it for several years now. It works great for sand and most outdoor terrain, just not a good indoor chair.
