Bicep curls? Bench press? Squats? You know stereotypical meathead stuff lol if so how much? And any recommendations?

I used to be into lifting before my accident and was wondering how much I could do now? I'm still in rehab so haven't had a chance to expirement. Obvi I won't be squating 400+ but anyone able to squat the bar? More?

I have started to do workouts; I often do wheelchair pushups in my chair to work on my arms. I have wanted to go to the weight room, but I feel weird going in there. I have yet to try bench, and I am not sure how well I could do it with my tone in my legs. I have never done squats, or prob can’t do them. My recommendation is talk with your PT/OT and gets a workout program going. Get some weights to take home with you and work out from home. IF you use a chair everyday like me you need strength to get up the cursive hills, lol.

You just go to a gym and experiment. I am incomplete and using pulley weights while standing has taught me a lot about how to correct my posture. At first figuring how to get on the machines was adequate challenge. People are friendly and do not often comment on my being in a wheelchair, other than offering help. Here is a short thread to view:

About a month ago I started doing a more active work out. I think I get lazy during the winter months and I've started to realize married life has put more padding on than I'd like. Most of what I do is like yoga. I spend more time stretching, doing things like slow push ups, leaning side to side while Indian Style on the bed. I do a little lifting in 2 awkward exercises. For one, I'll lay on my back in bed and hold onto a 20 lbs bar bell above my head. I'm a T5, so I don't have a whole lot of ab control, and I'll swing the barbell forward, over my head, directly above me, and the force of it propels me into a sitting position. I do it only enough until my abs realize I'm trying to do a sit up and they take over. I'm not sure if that's considered lifting. More like swinging, but it's one of the only ways I can initiate a sit up.

The other is kind of a squat. I stand in my walker and go down, bending my knees and then kind of like a dip, I push myself back into a standing position. Again, I try to only use my arms as much as they're needed. When my knees are all the way bent, no matter how hard I try, I can't push up. But at, like 60 degrees, they start to listen and push a little. Sometimes they're completely useless and it's just a work out for the shoulders.

I've been working out mainly because I've gotten fatter. Not, like, enormous, but I could lose 20 lbs. I only lift with my arms and shoulders to keep enough strength where I could pick myself up off the ground, but most of the time it's just aerobic or yoga stuff.

On a somewhat off-topic note, I'm getting a big jug of Whey Protein Powder Tuesday, so maybe I might kick my routine up a notch. =D
3 doctors diagnosed me with hysterical paralysis (weee!), 1 diagnosed an incomplete T7, another T2 and the last (and most accurate) T5. Trampolines are BAD. Sleep is unpredictable. And never kiss strangers. Life has moved on.

Well depending on how much ARM movement/function you have. I'm a t3 and when I was in rehab center I had to start out doing 1 lb dumbbells and move up from there with medicine balls pullys balance exercises n wrk hard.. n I workout a lot now I go to this therapy place and use the gym and do workouts with free weights at home

TOTALLY, MAN!!! best thing for you to
But im not going to lie to you. your not an average person anyone, your different. it took me a couple years to really let that set in, BUT then i decided, If i was not a "normal" person any more and i couldn't be average, than I was not going to be an average "wheelchair person" either!!!! I decided i was going to have an above average JOb, and i was going to be above the "wheelchair avergae fit" and that ment it if could movie it, i was going to work it!!!!
life in the gym, like anything ells will be different. I can squat anymore. But i do workout every day!!
and you learn to adapt and make it work you know. the gym is like my sanctary, after school its kind of the place i have found i can 'fight back' you know. I desided, if i had to be in a wheelchair, than i was going to be an above average guy in a wheelchair, no matter what it took.

when you get out of rehab. my advice is to start workingout and building up ANY muscle that you can possibly control. I mean if it movie workit out. If you don't have the hand stength, FIND AWAY to make it work.

I have a C7 injury. when i left the hospital i would barally hold a cup. last monday i benched 200lb. maybe not that impresive for a normal guy, but im getting there. I might not be able to squat, but i would love to tell someone i can bench more than they can squat. :)
check this vidoe out, it might not be all that amazing to a normal person, but when you realize people in wheelchairs, that have no grip and use clips to hold onto the bar, aren't suppose to be able to do stuff like this!! thats just the goal and mind set you got to have.

attached is a photo affter i got some strangth back, it doesn't look it, but that is one steep hill. which isn't that impresive , but for the fact that C7 quads are not suppost to do that kind of stuff.

you find the benefits of working out, dieting and training will get you so much more freedom to. after i got some strength in my arms back, i figured out how to climb in and out of a Jeep and thats what i drive now. people with limited hand strength don't drive fourwheeling rides!

its all about what you chose man. so people chose to deal with this stuff in, anger towards everyone ells, some people chose to become a "rude wheelchair person", so chose the alcohal rought, some chose to sit around and allow life to move on without them....I pray you chose to be a fighter, that you become even more inovative then the rest of us, and that you really stand out from the rest of the wheelchair population!!!

Bro you got it man!!! if it moves, make it work for you. I remember the weak muscles!! not happy memories.
You have more than you know. Right now, everything is weak and atrophied and going hay wire, but when you get out, start working slowly, it comes back so fast!!! And you'll have more function; stuff starts to come back, stuff the doctors, therapist, and nurses didn't even think you had because at the time you were so weak.
I’ll tell you what man, this is my email. Write it down, if you want, when you’re ready email me. Ill share what I know, I actually got my personal training cert, about a year ago. Imjosiah@comcast.net
During your free time, you would check out the “wheelchair bodybuilding world” youtube Nick Scott. I let myself get up to about 250lb and was feeling like pretty down, when I decided to work what I got I found this guy and knew it could be done.
HAHA you’re a fighter if your still in rehab and your thinking about working out!! I like that.

Haha I've actually joined a upper n lower extremity groups so I get to take out 30mins for each everyday to simply lift weights and exercise and my therapy aids supervise(this is not my actual therapy). I'm only 6 months into my injury so I'm trying to be proactive right from the beginning. I used to lift a lot before my accident and I feel lk me being young and in very good shape has really helped my recovery. Maybe muscle memory? Who knows lol but ill def stay in touch!

Ya, but something tells me everyone elses way of doing it would've been wrong

Anyways, I don't work out as much as I'd like to or I should (Busy + lazy + Any other excuse I can think of :P ) I should be stretching more too, but only having 3 feet of intestine makes it a huge pain in the ass. More than once I go to stretch my leg and *POP* off goes the ostomy bag and :shitfan:
But, I do ocasionally lift some weights or whatnot while waiting for crap to render or if I have a free arm. Should do more, I know. My leg is so messed up thats to a certian PT, but we'll let the courts make that easier to cope with :muahaha:

I usually train biceps curl/shoulder shrugs once a week with manuals. A few months ago my physiotherapaut ordered a nice pair of training gloves so i can work out my
body with other tools than just training bags. You can find them here: http://www.activehands.co.uk/
Its very useful for injuries without finger or grip funtions.
