I was admitted to the hospital on July 4 cause of a uti I had till saturday and wow worst hospital stay ever . They didn't even know how my bowels had to be done and i kept telling the nurses how to do it and they were still lost . Also they bath me the last day I was there so Imagine I smelled like a pig on a farm , also They didn't have a commode wheelchair I could use and so I had to poop on the bed witch I never did cause my body is used to do it while sitting down for 45 min . The point is Is I was not able to go to the bathroom till I got home on the 4th day , also the nurses are more lost than the word lost , i smelled like a pig and also I was in bed 4 days that was driving me nuts . If It was not for my family members being there with me and helping me I think i would have died in that place. does anybody else had something similar happend to them?

Yep Paraadrian - I had a similar experience many years ago. From then on I have only ever used the services of the specialist spinal injuries unit wherever possible - even for things like having my wisdom teeth out. General hospitals are very dangerous places for people like us as their norms of care are based on non disabled physiology.

I hope the reason you were admitted to the hospital has been sorted.

Yes, when I was first admitted into the hospital after my injury. I was first diagnosed as crazy (hysterical paralysis) and the doctors, including a pediatric neurologist, said I would eventually decide to stop throwing my temper tantrum and then everything was OK. I guess the first misconception that lead to such bad care was that nothing was really wrong. The doctor said I was crazy, so... wait for her to stop being crazy.

Fast forward 2 days later and a nurse finally asked "when was the last time you urinated?"... 2 days ago. It was a full 7 days later before someone even considered bowels, but the crazy hadn't worn off, so they figured in time I'd decide when I really needed to go. My mom pulled me out of this hospital, which was ironically the same hospital she'd worked at in ICU for 15 years, and she transferred me to Robert Packer just one state down from us. Robert Packer RULES! I had chicken strips and bacon for dinner AND the nurse came in the rub my tummy. I still couldn't go, but the next day I had a milogram and as soon as they laid me on my stomach... those poor doctors. =(

My mom also transferred to be a nurse down at Robert Packer in their ICU unit after the whole screw up and she still works there.

Aside from terrible care at Wilson Hospital in New York is that there was a terrible breach in my information. With my mom working there, when one of her co-workers saw her name on my medical records, the nurse went through everything. She knew my entire medical history, which wasn't a big deal, but when I was first admitted they were considering sedating me with anti-psycho drugs. There was mention of possible parental abuse from my dad, which there was NOT, but when any child comes in injured or horridly traumatized, they have to suspect it. Up until the 6th day, no one had a diagnosis yet and my parents were told nothing about any updates, test results, and they weren't even allowed to visit me. So, on the 6th day, this clueless nurse who worked with my mom comes up to her in the elevator and says "I'm so sorry about your daughter. Is your husband going to jail? He should pay for what he did. Is she crazy?"

Those records were never even seen by either of my parents. No one had asked me about any parental abuse, yet there was this huge report about how my dad had pushed me down the driveway or something. And somehow, this b*tch of a nurse feels it's OK for her to go through private records?

OK, vent over.

3 doctors diagnosed me with hysterical paralysis (weee!), 1 diagnosed an incomplete T7, another T2 and the last (and most accurate) T5. Trampolines are BAD. Sleep is unpredictable. And never kiss strangers. Life has moved on.

Black Sheep I hope that nurse was given a disciplinary!!

I am so very lucky that aside from a few little hiccups my hospital stays have been few and far between, and satisfactory. I will however be making sure I get private medical insurance when I can afford it as my experience of private hospital care was one far superior to even the best care I had received under the NHS.

I believe she was fired, yes. But it wasn't entirely our doing. About 6 months after my injury we consulted a lawyer to see if there was any link to a drug I'd been given 6 weeks before I became paralyzed. The lawyer went through every detail of every event in the hospital because, well, he was looking to sue the pants off anyone he could... I think it's totally wrong how he approached it, but anyhow, this nurse came up during the process and it was brought to the hospital's attention. Afterwards, we were given the whole deal of paperwork and accusations that the doctor's had written up and it was only then we learned that they'd intended on reporting my dad to child protective services, along with the other assumptions.

It wasn't a total loss, though. If Wilsone Hospital had done a better job, I might not have gone to Robert Packer and gotten an accurate diagnosis or good treatment. And mom likes her job too.
