Opinions on the Preclinical Evaluation of Novel Therapies for Spinal Cord Injury - A Comparison Between Researchers and Spinal Cord Injured Individuals.

We previously conducted a survey to garner the opinions and perspectives of scientific and clinical researchers on what levels of preclinical evidence were needed in order to justify translating a promising neuroprotective or neuro-regenerative therapy in spinal cord injury (SCI) into a human clinical trial (Kwon et al., 2010). Aside from MS & a few other demylinizing disorders....who prey-tell would fit under "chronic spinal cord injury"? Well I spose that a few of those who do extreme sports could re-break their back/neck.....but really WHO ELSE fits that CHRONIC portion of this label? :dunno:

The comments posted on the article at the blogspot were as interesting as the article itself. I enjoyed reading them.

I think I read in the past that the acute stage of injury is 3 months, however other info I read on Care Cure state that decompression years after date of injury can have beneficial effects. I think what is meant in this article is that most people who are not given administered treatments within the acute stage of injury are left with chronic spinal cord injury; or if treatments were administered but had no beneficial effect.

In my country treatment within the acute stage of injury differs from hospital to hospital which totally contravenes the aim to have standards of care which is supposed to be set by NICE and regulated by the Care Quality Commission.

I guess what is meant here is what research is going in to chronic spinal cord injury with the scar tissue issue (I'm a poet and now you know it).

An acute SCI injury reverts into a chronic state very quickly. Both injury states are vastly different and researchers do separate a lot of the intense work due to the scar. Essentially, the CSPG in the site of lesion has made treatments impossible. Great strides have been made in this area to rid the lesion site of CSPG. This is all good news because the lesion site does tend to get larger over time. The scar is also inhibiting new axonal growth so this research is critical for future therapy options.
