Hi,

If you're a Quad, and you choke on fluid, then there's not alot a carer can do but let the Quad cough the fluid up in small amounts over time.

Leaning the Quad forward if in their wheelchair will help, as it puts pressure on the diaphram, giving extra pressure for a cough.

I've choked on my own spit before, and when it happens, all my wife can do is watch as I try to clear my lungs.

The trick is to take slow deep breaths in, and fast explosive coughs out.

Just the sound scares the shit out of people, your eyes stream with tears, but if he keeps calm, the choking from fluid will pass.

There wasn't alot you could of done, except lean him forward, and if no one taught you that, then how can it be your fault.

Regards

Choking on your own slobber (or in my case) from sucking on a straw - I drink everything from a straw - is a pain. You're going to cough till it's over regardless. Pats on the back don't help, you just have to accept the fact I have choked and I will choke in the future.
