Hello,
My name is Philip Vance and I am currently studying ‘Electronics and Computing’ at the University of Ulster – Magee campus in Northern Ireland. At the start of the year I started my work placement and have been asked to modify a power wheelchair so that it may be suited to more users with varied disabilities. In order to achieve this I need invaluable feedback from people with a perspective view of what I am trying to design. Following this is a short list of ideas with a small detail description. I would appreciate your input in appraising the ideas as it would help in giving me direction for the project.
Many Thanks,
Philip Vance.

Design Suggestions
Please rate the ideas using the following:
1 = Excellent
2 = Good
3 = Average
4 = Poor
5 = Terrible

1.Audio Activated Switch
With these switches in place, the user would be able to co-ordinate his/her movement with voice activation.

2.Camera Mounted
With a camera mounted system, the user would be warned in advance of any obstacles or dangers. The chair would be able to auto-navigate through a building itself with little or no input from the user.

3.Breath Operated Switch
Chair operated through a breath activated micro switch. When user blows into pipe, chair with move forward etc.

4.Head Operated Switch
Head rest consists of imbedded switches in the material. User will then lean back on the head rest to control movement.

5.Push Button/Touch Pad
Simple touch pad control system that operates the chair.

6.Thought Movement
There is a cap that covers the head which reads or detects brain activity when someone is thinking. With this installed and working properly, the user would be able to control the chair using thought. (Still unexplored and may have limited abilities)

7.Handheld PC
Chair is controlled through a handheld PC. Not only would it control of direction and speed through it but when stable or motionless a PC is at hand with schedule, appointments etc.

8.Chin Operated
Consists of a soft ball operated joystick which sits under the chin.

9.Foot Operated
Foot pad which controls the direction of the chair depending on where the pad is depressed.

10.Eye Movement
A device which sits over the eye and detects movement. With this movement, direction and speed control is achievable.

As you can see, there are many possibilities for the project and im not sure which to proceed with. Thankyou for taking the time to read this questionaire I would be greatful for any feedback you can give.

Thanks guys for taking the time to fill out the questionnaire. Think ive now decided what I am going to build. Gonna build a device to operate the chair that can be Joystick, touchpad, PC mounted and voice controlled. That way, the user has the choice of control each day.
