Hi all,

Am a C5/6 quad, borrowing my boyfriend's account.

Been injured nearly 9 years and have experienced the normal bowel problems. They have recently become worse and am now in constant 'pain'. Went to see my consultant yesterday and had an x-ray which shows severe constipation. He suggested taking Senakot which I used to take when I was first injured and I know you can't always rely on it not to cause accidents.

I would like to know if anyone has tried colonic irrigation to overcome these problems? If anyone has any first hand experience, please contact me at wheelierach@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks,

Rachel

Hi there!

I've been doing colonic irrigation for about 15 years and it seems to work pretty well for me. I think I've only had a problem with constipation once during that time.

I know there are various methods available, some of them are quite quick and can be done independently. I definately advise speaking to a continence advisor about this.

Good luck! :Birthday_Balloons:
Paraplegic with Spina Bifida. Sensory and function level is T8. T11-L5 fusion 1993. Laminectomy and decompression T10 2006. Spinal fusion T8-T12 with instrumentation Feb 2007. Moderate kyphoscoliosis. Taking 75mg Lyrica 3xday for neuropathic pain.

Ok I havent had such problems but my husband has had really bad irritable bowel for years. Its really blighted his life especially as he has had horrible constipation for a very long time. Has made him utterly miserable. However he has started to have CI therapy and he says he feels really fantastic. He has lost a couple of inches off his waist, doesnt feel so sluggish nor does he feel bloated and uncomforatable. honestly hes a different man!

So for you Id say give it a try. its a pretty gentle procedure so I dont see it can do you any harm, and it more likely really be of benefit.

cheers

How often do you need to do it? Can you do it yourself? Be great to 'last' more than 2 days!!!

I used to have this done once a year. But the place where I used to go closed down. I searched everywhere but could not find a place that was accesssble. Anyway go for it smileandnod you will feel like a million bucks after it's done. What will happen is they will more than likely want you to come in for three appointments. After the third irrigation, you will feel just wonderful. You will have to transfer onto a bed. If you can't then you might want to bring someone along so that they can help you transfer. Once you have completed these sessions it would be a good idea to start some kind of program that will prevent you from becoming pluged up again.

LIFE IS NOT A JOURNEY TO THE GRAVE WITH THE INTENTION OF ARRIVING SAFELY IN A PRETTY AND WELL PRESERVED BODY,
BUT RATHER TO SKID IN BROADSIDE, THOROUGHLY USED UP, TOTALLY WORN OUT, AND LOUDLY PROCLAIMING----WOW----WHAT A RIDE!!!
