One of the largest wheelchair races is held in Oita, Japan, every year - this year it's on the 29th Oct. Check out their web site http://www.wheelchair-marathon.com/

Maybe you should go and check out the race and speak to racers, coaches etc and see where there's a club near you.

This is a really cool event. I had never heard of it before this. Do you know of anything similar to this in the USA? If not, maybe it is time we started one.

Hi, I'm in the US and am just getting into wheelchair racing myself. A few months ago I made an apointment to meet with someone at the Lakeshore Foundation. He showed me different racing chairs and let me try it out. It was so great! I'm planning on going to Flordia to get my own racing chair made later this month!

I think the best thing for you to do is to try to find out if there are any places that will let yuo try racing, or even someone who races themselves. Why not try calling some place that deals with spinal cord injuries and see if they know of any place or person who can help. It's an expensive sport to get into, so I really suggest trying it out before you go ahead and buy a chair! Good luck! :)

Abraham,
I started racing back in 1993 when I was 36 years old. Began using a regular 4-wheel racing chair. I have since purchased two 3-wheel racing chairs. I ahve done 27 marathons and about 100 other races over the past 15 years. It's a blast! You have to be dedicated to working out to get your arms, shoulders and back muscles in shape. Believe me, you won't regret getting into wheelchair racing!
