Ok guys,

How many TV programmes or films have you seen a disabled person in.

Let's see how many we can list.

I'll start you off with this list.

Born on the Fourth of July (1989)
Breaking the Waves (1996)
Coming Home (1978)
Dr. Strangelove (1964)
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
My Left Foot (1989)

There's an advert on the TV at the moment for Ginsters Cornish pasties which shows a wheelchair user asleep in the park getting wheelclamped!

You can see the advert here: http://www.ginsters.com/

Balamory... Penny Pocket
Me Too, its new and I havent really watched it but my son seems to love it. Think they have a blind character.
Something Special, teaches the use of makaton and has children with quite severe learning dificulties.

Simon :)

This made me think...

When we see a wheelchair user in an advert like this they always make sure that a BIG FAKE LEGCAST is clear to see. Is that because they think while poor buggers with broken legs wont mind having the P*ss taken we poor crippled for life types might be upset?

Why is there so many able_bodied actors playing dissabled roles? is there a shortage of dissabled actors? Some of the above actors that have been mentioned here are not dissabled but this is something that i have wondered about before...why? there must be a lot of talented dissabled actors out there or maybe its down to the lack of opportunities. It wouuldn't be acceptable to paint a white actor black so why does this happen so often?......sorry can't think of any other than what has been mentioned above.

This has been driving me crazy...there is a movie with an actor who is disabled...I didn't watch the whole movie, and it was awhile ago...maybe someone else can remember the name of the movie. (?) It may have already been mentioned, I don't know. :)

The actor seemed to have spina-bifida...he walked on his hands. There was a scene where he's impressing all the people at the bar by doing horizontal push-ups from the edge of the table/bar...his legs and feet suspended. He had huge muscular arms. In the movie, I think he had some information, and some guys hunted him down and found him in the bar...they went to a booth to talk. That's about all I remember.

Anyone remember this movie?

Band of Brothers

A friend of mine lost his legs and some fingers whilst in the Army and now does, what he calls, "Stump" work for movies - on the back of his shirt it says "Stump Man" instead of "Stunt Man". He was in Band of Brother having his legs blown off and fingers shot off, and parachuting in getting his legs shot off.

He said it was the first time they've used amputees to do full stunt work, as up until then it was not seen as PC to have a double amputee on false legs getting blown and being thrown through the air squirking blood out of his stumps - especially when that was what happened to him in real life.

The stories he told me about this work had me in stitches! They explore new ways to make these scenes more gory all time, and it was refreshing to see there was proper well paid and enjoyable work out there for him to do in between his freefall parachuting competitions!

Current series of Spooks. "Juliet" uses an electric wheel chair after breaking her back in 2nd or 3rd episode.

Wasn't there a paraplegic guy in Emmerdale

Films- The other side of the mountain (1975)

The other side of the mountain 11 (1978)

Both films are based on the true story of a female ski champion paralyzed in a skiing accident. Years since I watched them!!

Acting takes a lot of training, then it takes a long time to find the right actor to fit the right role. Narrowing your search to just disabled actors would limit your range drastically. (I was a professional actor) There were very few trained disabled actors that I knew of.

"Welcome to the Ironside guide at TV.com. When an assassin's bullet confines him to a wheelchair for life ending his career as Chief of Detectives, Robert T. Ironside becomes a consultant to the police department. Detective Sergeant Ed Brown and policewoman Eve Whitfield join with him to crack varied and fascinating cases. Ex-con Mark Sanger is employed by the chief as home help but eventually becomes a fully fledged member of the team also. Officer Whitfield leaves after 4 years..."
A TV series from awhile ago. Ironside was my man. Oh yeah :)

Joe on Family Guy. And they pull of some good jokes too. I think one of the writers of the show either know someone in a wheelchair or are in a wheelchair.

If anyone likes Japanese drama, check out It's a Beautiful Life. It's about 14 hours or so, but well worth watching.

Further to my post above, check out this link - really good article about Al and Swifty. I cracked up reading their quotes as I could hear them saying the things they quoted!

http://www.thesun.co...4411599,00.html

A funny story about these two nutters! I took Al and Swifty for dinner at a local beach bar and a busker came along "pling plonging" on his guitar. We were the last to leave and the busker was still there but running out of songs, so started singing Irish songs. Swifty politely asked the guy not to sing any "Rebel Songs" but it looked like the busker just ignored him, so Swifty changed his approach and still being polite and with a nice smile on his face he said, "If you sing any rebel songs, Al and I will drag you into the sea and drown you!"

I laughed and laughed and tried to convince the busker to sing some rebel songs as he was getting on my nerves too and I very much wanted to watch these two nutters on stumps drag this busker in to the sea! Alas... the busker never sang any rebel songs!
