Hi all, Crossroads, was a young man in wheel chair, was hotel owners son, He was in a chair in his normal life, and I think he died quiet young, think he had Muscular Distrophy, or something similar. Long time ago, cannot remember exactly.

Ironside thats an old one!
He was just pretending then, but ironically poor health and burgeoning weight later made his walking difficult -- for real.

There's also a movie called "Saved" with Macaulay Culkin (i'm not sure if the spelling is right), where he plays a paraplegic.

Wow I love this film!
The first time I bought it I watched it four times in a row haha

T.V. show "Ed". Daryl Mitchell, para in real life, portrayed his own character, Eli. He was my inspiration when I went into rehab post SCI. Just a few weeks prior to my paralyzation I watched an episode that concentrated on a day in his life from rolling around on his bed getting dressed to go to work in the morning to the beginning of a new relationship with a girl and the uncertainties that brought about. It was handled beautifully and you know that Daryl had a lot of input into that storyline because it was an eye opening view into the life of a paraplegic.

Daryl Mitchell was also on the 'Suite Life with Zack and Cody', which is on the Disney Channel. Daryl competed against the stars of the show in wheelchair basketball.

Does anyone know if Daryl has any more gigs. or is he just focusing on replacing Chris Reeve for the Foundation? The new spokesperson so to speak.

I started getting into this show on The N called Degrassi. After watching it for a while, one of the characters got shot and is now in a para in a wheelchair. They actually do a good job of portraying his character and life in a wheelchair.

I think it was Bad Boys with Will smith a few wheelchair basketball players were seen dribbling a ball down the pavement and nearly got sent flying as a chase ensued around them.

i believe one of the players was ex USA wheelchair basketball player Reggie Colton but i may be wrong.

How about anything "X-men"? Professor Xahvier was in a w/c. Also E.R. had a doctor who used one crutch. And in the 80's or 90's there was a show in the US called "Dougy Houser M.D."; during one episode it was spring break and the main character was interested in a girl in the hotel swimming pool they talked......then she got out of the pool and into a w/c and the water of the pool saves the main character from chin bruising( to show he "had learned" at the end of the show he did write in his diary that how he reacted was wrong). I do remember seeing a commercial for a cruise line that had a woman in a w/c racing someone on roller blades. In some of the "Facts Of Life" TV series Blair has a cousin who has CP.

All in all I see other disabled people very little in movies, TV, or advertising.
xahvier is in a powerchair...

We started watching that movie, but it wasn't as good as I thought, so we stopped. It just seemed to get a bit "boring"/ At least in our oppinion. What did you think of it?

Peter Kay & Phoenix Nights

A lot like Lou & Andy in Little Britain it has made people laugh (in a nice light hearted way) at being in a wheelchair and the comedy that does arise from it. I find it makes AB's question themselves about misguided assumptions of us wheelies.

There are as mentioned some great dibbly films and some really bad portrayals too.

Personally I can't see why any female (AB or dibbly) isn't swept off their feet by the pure sexiness and strength of character of John Voight in Coming Home.

Yes, I recall it as I fancy the bum off the actor who plays him (well he has gorgeous eyes..funny as he was called "eyes only" or something like that, lol). Incidently, the 'shooting' occured in the second or so episode.. and he spent the whole ( two?) series/seasons as a wheelie..aside from the times that he was equipped with the 'suit' brace thingy which he was able to walk with ( I think it was invisable, bbut may be wrong). Also, there was a guy who "Logan" got a lot of technical info and expertise biologically from and he was disabled too. He seemd to be a very high quad due to CP or other similar if I recall correctly. It is going back a few years. It was good the first season ( Jessica alba was great etc), but the second series they pulled the plug on thye budget and eventually production, so it did suck..

Take care,

K

One not mentioned thus far: "Palomino" a for TV movie/mini series adapted from Danielle Steel's Novel of the same name. Its main character is a young woman who becaomes para after a riding accident. Later she is reunited with her 'beau' who is unaware of her injury. By that point she has set up a riding school and is able to get back into the saddle with the help of a modified saddle made by an Old Bloke ( you know the type) who is dear to her heart as a daddy figure. The 'Beau' doesn't notice the lead's injury and when he eventually does find out, he loves her anyway..or something like that....lol
I remember this movie so vividly as it was on the TV the day ( or thereabouts) that Christopher Reeve broke his neck. I recall thinking how uncanny that was...

Take care,

K

Aardman Animations, the company behind Wallace & Gromit and Creature Comforts, has developed a range of new characters for a disability awareness campaign. The campaign, launched by the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity, is called "Creature Discomforts" and features six animal characters, each of which is voiced by a disabled person.

Characters include Flash the sausage dog, Spud the slug, Brian the bull terrier and Peg the hedgehog - all wheelchair-bound with different disabilities - Slim the stick insect with a walking stick and Tim the tortoise on crutches.

Matt Roloff on Little People, Big World uses a scooter.

Eddie, an American contestant on an early season of Big Brother had one of his legs amputated.

On Little House on the Prairie, Albert had a penpal that was in a wheelchair. And I think Nellie or Mrs. Oleson was in one for an episode.

There was a character on Seinfeld that was in a wheelchair. And George used a Rascal in an episode, but I don't think we can really count that!
