Hi everyone.......what a great site! Let me tell you a little about what brought me here...........I am a urology nurse :) with a patient that I have become very close to that has a C1-C2 burst fracture. He managed to get off the vent and is breathing on his own.....yea! He is a year out from a dirt bike accident that caused all of this. I am trying to keep his spirits up and want him to know that he is needed and appriciated.........any thoughts?

I hope that ya'll don't mind me joining your group and if you have any urological questions, please post them and I will help you all that I can.

Hi urologynurse :) I think it is great that you joined the forum and want to help your friend out.
Just being able to get off the vent at such a high level is a huge achievment in itself :)
It is hard to keep your spirits up, but im sure that just having you around is quite a lift in itself :) Also (circumstances were a bit different) but i hated it when my friends came in and treated and talked to me like i was made of china...mucking around and copping a bit of friendly criticisim reminds you that you are still normal...friendly banter maybe

juls........I agree that him getting off the vent is a huge accomplishment!!! I always talk to him like I would talk to anyone else. I joke and cut up with him and we also talk alot about health issues and more serious stuff when he wants. The only thing that I try to do is always stand close enough to him that we can make eye contact which can sometimes be hard because I'm very short and he is usually on a bed! I have always made a concious effort to treat my patients how I would want to be treated or how I would want one of my family members to be treated.........you never know when you could be in someone elses situation.

Thanks for the advise!! :dunno:

Thats exactly how I used to treat my patients.

My favourite motto is "Do as you would be done by" (Its my signature here ) Its a shame that not more nurses (and Drs) feel like that.

BTW Welcome to the Forum :bye:
