Rehabilitation Institue of Michigan (RIM) in Detroit, Michigan for inpatient therapy. Plan on going to The Recovery Project in Livonia, Michigan for outpatient therapy. Also considering the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery at RIM afterwards.
Boat racing accident July 2006. Still hoping for some return!

I had hoped to go to Craig but there was a two to six week waiting list. A fellow boat racer went to Craig and had very good results as well as good things to report about it. However, I felt it would be better to start an inpatient program earlier rather than later. I chose RIM (Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan) because it came highly recommended by a physician who was a former SCI patient at RIM, it was close to home, and they could take me immediately. Overall, I think RIM is a very good facility and they have a good program.

I didn't go to a rehab hopsital. All i did was like three weeks of inpatient rehab at the hopital i was already at for my injuries due to the car acciden i was in. I was in the hospital for a total of almost two months and then i just did outpatient physical therapy, but not a a place specializing in sci or anything. I hated the hospital so much, and i didn't have time anyway because i had to go back to school really soon so i could graduate on time. A few docs told me i should go but i totally refused, and i've done just fine teaching myself, but i've always been really independent, and don't like people telling me what to do anyway.Do people normally go to these rehab hospitals?

Chedoke quad school in Hamilton then Lyndhurst in Toronto. Home of CPA... Canadian Paraplegic Association. Great building and equipment but attendant staff didn't give a Rat's Ass. Soiled bags, condoms, etc., lying all over washroom areas. Too bad. Conditions forced me to leave after 3 mos.

I went to TIRR in Houston, TX since I live here. I hear it is a great rehab facility but I haven't been to another to compare.

My stay was June 20th, 2005 through June 30th, 2005 and then December 5th, 2005 through January 13th, 2006. Wow, it's been a year since I left rehab woot for me!

I went to Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston. It wasn't all as great as I thought it would be, but, I might have not been as motivated as I could have been. Has anyone else been there? I was wondering for example, how many hours per day PT did people get? At Spalding, if I did everything right, then I would be able to receive one hour per day, as long as there wasn't something special going on.

In particular, I was wondering about Shepard in Atlanta. Also the one in Denver or near Denver. Will you comment Danielle87 about your experience in Atlanta?

Also, there is this, out of the mainstream rehab in Rhode Island called Shake a Leg. They're different from the traditional, hospital style, rehab program. For one, many of the staff have some kind of spinal cord injury themselves. Also, I guess you have to bring your own PCA staff. But they go sailing! Anybody been there?

I was at a branch of the Healthsouth Rehabs, called chesapeake healthsouth.... the only spinal cord injury, and youngest patient by about 25 years.... I wish there had been a more SCI oriented inpatient therapy around here, but the closest one is 2 hours away, which was too far from my kids... I kindof regret it now, though. I think it may have made it a little easier to be around others going through the same situation, and with therapists who had a little more firsthand expierience rather than just Textbook... but to give them credit, they tried really hard. I wish I had gone to Kernan...

It's been over 30 yrs., but I went to St Paul Ramsey (now Regions Hospital) for 3 months right after my injury. 6 months later I did another 3 months at the U of Minnnesota hospital, which is now called Fairview Hospital...all these hospital mergers and name changes, lol.
