I went to Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston. It wasn't all as great as I thought it would be, but, I might have not been as motivated as I could have been. Has anyone else been there? I was wondering for example, how many hours per day PT did people get? At Spalding, if I did everything right, then I would be able to receive one hour per day, as long as there wasn't something special going on.

In particular, I was wondering about Shepard in Atlanta. Also the one in Denver or near Denver. Will you comment Danielle87 about your experience in Atlanta?

Also, there is this, out of the mainstream rehab in Rhode Island called Shake a Leg. They're different from the traditional, hospital style, rehab program. For one, many of the staff have some kind of spinal cord injury themselves. Also, I guess you have to bring your own PCA staff. But they go sailing! Anybody been there?

Captain, I too went to Shepherd Center in Atlanta...I have one word to describe this place...AMAZING. They did so much for me there, not only did they focus on my Physical needs, but along with Emotional and Recreational needs. I done Inpatient Therapy (6/15/06 - 8/8/06) at Shepherd Center for 2 months, then their Outpatient Therapy (8/8/06 - 9/8/06) for a month. If you have anymore questions please do not hesitate to ask!

I know at Shepherd at ATL the staff was real upbeat and motivating and as soon as you were sufficiently recovered from the "repair work" they'd hunt your butt down for an hour and a half of Pt and OT five days a week and 45 min. PT on Sat. with a few special group exercises the therapists would enlist you in to whup your butt if they thought ya needed it.

:help: Back in 1966 at Childrens Hospital in Baltimore, MD I was a skinny 12 year old para T-6, they back then had me fitted 2 months from injury for complete head to toe braces. Not lightweight aluminum, or some other lightweight metal but stainless steel braces and they weighed a ton, heck the shoes alone weighed 5 pounds easy. I was in PT everyday standing up in this contraption, learning how to walk with crutches. I think after 4-6 months I made it 10 steps before I was ready to faint. Why they thought it ever would be possible or even safe for me to try walking with those I'll never know. But back then they had everyone but Quads in them. The only ones that ever walked at all very far was Low Ls and Ss. Not fond memorys of PT and the :yahoo: woMan that ran the god awful place..eeek!! Thank God my parents saw the loonisy in all that. Is this still tried today.... :help:

My partner started off at the Princess of Wales hospital in Sydney immediately after his accident, then three months later was flown back to Uk to Stoke Mandeville, where he spent 6 months harassing nurses, physios and OT's, and causing havoc with the other patients, he says they all loved him, i think they were just humouring him!!

I was sent to Iowa City - Iowa University Hospitals for my injuries after my wreck. Was there about 3 weeks while I had multiple surgeries and they were wonderful. But, they no longer have rehab facilities there and I transferred back to Des Moines, Iowa, to be nearer my family and friends.

Was 2 months in-house rehab at Iowa Methodist Hospital - Younkers Rehab Center for just about 2 months. They were wonderful and I could not have asked for better care. At one point in time there was talk of moving me to a nursing home for some physical healing but my family fought this and won, thank goodness!

After I was home, tried outpaitent from my local hospital but that was a joke!

We think that both places are wonderful, we are now at the point where Ben is done with therapy so we are kinda doing our own thing...the therapistat froedert had suggested a work hardening program to get him ready to go back to his job, but of course the ins will not cover...do you have any suggestions or are you aware of any programs in the milwaukee/Madison area??

You could try contacting DVR,Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. You have to apply and given his substantial disability,he'd likely not be put far on the waiting list.

Hope it can help

I didn't go to a rehab hopsital. All i did was like three weeks of inpatient rehab at the hopital i was already at for my injuries due to the car acciden i was in. I was in the hospital for a total of almost two months and then i just did outpatient physical therapy, but not a a place specializing in sci or anything. I hated the hospital so much, and i didn't have time anyway because i had to go back to school really soon so i could graduate on time. A few docs told me i should go but i totally refused, and i've done just fine teaching myself, but i've always been really independent, and don't like people telling me what to do anyway.Do people normally go to these rehab hospitals?
I'm new but I believe most people go to rehab to get more strength, info and training that you won't get on your own. This type of injury is so diverse I have found, that having a physical therapist to help train is extremely valuable. I am sure you CAN do it on your own but it might be even BETTER if you have the help of the physical thereapist. That's their job.

I was in Shepard From 10-somthin-2004 till 1-15-05. I thought it was a pretty good experience. they certainly have a great collection of staff/knowldege/equipment. I've been thinkin of takin the jet boat down for their summer recrational sports retreat & learn to fly on some of those cool ski's & such...they bring all kinds of adapted rec toys. last year this fell into the good thing let pass category maybe some further motivation is needed.....Anybody wan't shotty???
