Ben was an in house patient at the UW Hosp In Madison, For 1 month did the rehab their as well...Now is in out patient Physical Therapy at Froedert Hosp In Milwaukee..Both places are amazing!!! Thank God for Physical therapists. ALSO the rehab dr's at both hospitals deserve a BIG THANKS AS WELL... Dr thomas in Madison and Dr Orr at Frodert are both GREAT!!!

I was an inpatient at Froedert for about five months,i appreciate alot for what therapy there did for me.

We think that both places are wonderful, we are now at the point where Ben is done with therapy so we are kinda doing our own thing...the therapistat froedert had suggested a work hardening program to get him ready to go back to his job, but of course the ins will not cover...do you have any suggestions or are you aware of any programs in the milwaukee/Madison area??

You could try contacting DVR,Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. You have to apply and given his substantial disability,he'd likely not be put far on the waiting list.

Hope it can help

I didn't go to a rehab hopsital. All i did was like three weeks of inpatient rehab at the hopital i was already at for my injuries due to the car acciden i was in. I was in the hospital for a total of almost two months and then i just did outpatient physical therapy, but not a a place specializing in sci or anything. I hated the hospital so much, and i didn't have time anyway because i had to go back to school really soon so i could graduate on time. A few docs told me i should go but i totally refused, and i've done just fine teaching myself, but i've always been really independent, and don't like people telling me what to do anyway.Do people normally go to these rehab hospitals?

I'm new but I believe most people go to rehab to get more strength, info and training that you won't get on your own. This type of injury is so diverse I have found, that having a physical therapist to help train is extremely valuable. I am sure you CAN do it on your own but it might be even BETTER if you have the help of the physical thereapist. That's their job.

Chedoke quad school in Hamilton then Lyndhurst in Toronto. Home of CPA... Canadian Paraplegic Association. Great building and equipment but attendant staff didn't give a Rat's Ass. Soiled bags, condoms, etc., lying all over washroom areas. Too bad. Conditions forced me to leave after 3 mos.

Matt's SCI was caused by a massive tumor that compressed his spine (neuroblastoma). He also suffers from breath holding with asystole (he now has a pacemaker), breathing and swallowing issues and all the fun stuff that comes with being tetraplegic. AD,clonis, scoliosis, temp. control issues you name it. He is however a happy, lively 6 year old. He loves fighting with his brother, video games, DVD's and chasing people with his motor chair. He also loves to flirt with the nurses at Egleston.

I also went to Shephard Center. I think it is a great place and the fact that Mrs. Shepards son had a sci years ago and didn't have a place to go for rehab that was close to home made her and his father start Shepard. She has seen to it that Shephard has everything needed because she understands. The staff is great and so kind and caring but yet works your butt off because they know its for your own good. My doctor at shephard also has a sci.

TRISL
The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis
I think they're a fairly new facility in comparison.
fantastically run. Great PT's, OT's and medical staff

I met and was a patient breifly of a few doctors and therapists that visited and designed programs for Christopher Reeve, apparently.

quick note about the RIC. Great hockey program. I participated in a practice with the blackhawks, and was very humbled.

Craig Hospital in Englewood, CO - just outside of Denver. Really great place, great staff.

I also am a graduate of Camp Craig in Englewood, CO. Can't believe the extent they went to help me. They flew me in a leer jet from Reno, Nv. and back for rehab. That place really is something special :)

I can't say that I went to a Rehab center, I went to OSF in Peoria, Illinois for 30 days. they are set up for SCI and the therapist's I thought were very good. I then came home for a week then had my lapenectomy done and came home the next day.I was a trouble maker.. then I did almost 18 months out patient at the county animal hospital, I did more on my own than they thought about.

Dod Hall in Columbus, Ohio. I know it has been closed awhile. Most people have emotional problems with such radical rearrangements of their lives. Any physical progress can be the help a person needs to make life an optomistic epiphany and not a drawn out torture. Back then there wasn't an ADA. People really wanted us in nursing homes and they didn't and still don't see anything wrong with their opinion that we are a curse on society. if you think thats pathetic, there are quads that believe it too. Kind of like a black guy joning the KKK?

Three months ago I was in five weeks of spinal cord rehab at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA. Initially I spent two weeks at another hospital in Modesto - it was the closest trauma center to my accident and I had two neurosurgeries there.

Good to hear things are coming together for Marc :muahaha:

I spent 3 months at SCVMC myself back in 2000-2001. I thought they did an excellent job for SCI patients of all levels. Great OT, PT, gym, pool, etc. (OK, the food could have been a little better.) I especially liked the way they used the "old timers" to mentor the SCI noobs to help them get over the initial emotional shock. Do they still have the mile "par course" set up in the halls?

The food was always cause for complaints :lmao: Generally I supplemented it with fresh fruit and protein shakes my friends brought in :)

Par course was probably one of my favorite times of the day ! When I was there the usual course was set up so that 7 laps = 1 mile. Often we went outside, which I really enjoyed.

The weekly peer support group was Monday afternoons after par course. I remember weeping in front of everyone my first time :wink05: There is also an off-site support group every month nearby that I'm still going to ...

I stopped in yesterday to say hello to the nursing staff now that my halo is off. I showed them the keychain I made out of one of the halo pins

Yup, 7 laps. I think the other hospital staff there just knew to stay out of those LONG corridors during that part of the day as there were always maniacs on the loose. :yahoo:

No question, outside was a real treat. I remember OT taking us out in their van for out first SCI "experiences" in the real world. Once we went and saw a movie, once out to dinner, and once we weren't supposed to, but we went over the hill to the annual Clam Chowder Festival in Santa Cruz! Great bunch of folks there.

Oh, and once my wife and I snuck out to the Wendy's across the street.

BTW, that's a cool keychain!

:lmao: Good times. They have 'recreation therapy' people now too ... initially I was more focused on exercise, PT, etc. but got finagled into the dinner / brunch / movie outings .. even went and did some wheelchair bowling with them. I had fun, despite myself :licklips:

After I was discharged and had some time to think about the whole experience in retrospect it seemed as though PT/OT/etc was oriented towards 'how to live', while rec. therapy was more 'what about life is worth living'. Solid program.
