Hi and happy safe Bonfire night to you all :soapbox: I was wondering if any of you have any knowledge of Cerebral Palsy? as i have an interview tomorrow with a 36 yr old man . I had a really nice chat over the phone with his sister and apparently this was a result of a near drowning when he was a child. I was always under the impression that CP was a birth defect but it seems im wrong. I guess im just a little nervous about the interview and i want to come across well as i hope to be his personal assistant if it all goes well. I just need a bit of insight first hand if anyone can help, you know limitations etc although we are all unique in our own way and not one of us is the same. The good thing im told is that this gentleman understands everything that is said to him although he is severely dissabled he has his own way of communicating so lets hope i give a good impression. I do hope this is ok to post on here as its not about sci...

Hi Bigsmiles,

I can probably help with this one! I have worked with disabled (mentally and physically) for years, and have worked with quite a few people with CP. I havent got the time to write much now, as I have to go to work shortly, but I will write more later...I imagine you will be fast asleep at the time so check back here in the morning if you can.

This man is quite possibly 'normal' mentally. CP people often are, so may have a good understanding of what you say and do. Dont be scared of him, inside he is the same as me and you....I think the hardest thing about these people is the communication thing, it can be embarrassing on both sides if you cant be understood.

Physically....it can vary, depending on the level of CP, just the same as any disability. But he will probably have limited control of his movements, not quite like spasms, but similar. Arms and legs can be flung out when you least expect it (I have had to duck on a number of occations!) as the messages that get through to limbs get confused.

He may need help with eating, as the messages that get through to EVERYTHING usually get confused....but that just takes time and patience....

Ummm...I cant think of anything much more at the moment, feel free to ask me any questions...
I always thought that CP was a birth thing too, but nothing surprises me anymore...basically its caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain I think.

Gota go now

Oh...he could have epilepsy as well....Maybe....
