So you all have wheelchairs, what sports do you like to play?.

Are you into Rugby, Athletics, Basketball, or just do you just like to see how many people you can run over in any one day :P !

Whats the best wheelchair sport out there, is there a fashionable sport, is there a new sport, are you into extreme sports?

I own my own microlight aircraft, fitted with hand controls.

Brilliant fun!

One of the only sports I know where we can compete on equal terms with non-disabled.

I have posted some pictures on yahoogroup SCI-UK

Any questions - just ask. Happy to help.

Does breaking a sweat & getting my heart rate up whilst I scrub my house count as a sport?? It should-it is a Fab workout laced with many challenges & requiring skill, extreme physical exertion and strategizing. I never thought to look into w/c sports & am Very active so this might be a good idea. Hmmm where to start looking into this would be my next thought...any suggestions beyond the phone book? :P

My son Drew 20 (T8 para of 2 years) after getting out of rehab started go-cart racing - with some help from friends made his own hand controls then went onto and into a quarter midget and now has a litre car for racing speedway - great group of people in the sport and very supportive of him. I suppose its an extreme sport but once he is in the seat he is the same as all the able bodied drivers. As a mum i find it a bit scarey but theres no stopping the boy cheers to all joolsk

Sorry guys, but sport was something I thougth I had left behind at school when I left. Since then I have done some hill walking and canoeing but not since I got a wheelchair. I'm afraid all I do is wheel round town, the local area and the supermarket more like a grand prix than your average shopper.

Otherwise I agree that housework counts as exercise, espcially dealing with a cyclinder vacuum cleaner and its tubes. Quite a nightmare!

However, I live in North East Fife and there does not seem to be much wheelchair sport here though in the south of Fife there probably is, but that's 40 miles away. Any suggestions?

As a T4/T5 complete, I have golfed and sailed in the last 6 months. I recently took up competition air rifle target shooting as well. Rules for handicapped people are relaxed over "normal" people and some of the most competative people are handicapped. One thing I can say about air rifle target shooting...I'ts cheap to do. You spend as much as you want on a rifle, but the pellets are about $0.01 a piece. You can get into the sport very cheaply and the guns are quite accurate, even at the lower priced regions. As a rule I do not like North American made guns. I favor the European made guns. Diana (germany) makes quite a range from the affordable model 24 to much higher priced guns. There are dozens of good air rifle manufacturers though.

Good luck. Get out there and enjoy.

ive liked sports at school and most of my life, up until a few years ago. dont ask why, becoz i have no idea

Me I have never been very good at sports but I spend alot of time in the outdoors I fish and I hunt
using a crossbow. This year I am going Sturgen fishing in July with my cousin he said I could catch one 8 feet in length or even bigger man I sure hope my breaks hold
I am also going fishing for tiger muskies in June with a friend of mine who holds the state record wich is 34 pounds.
In the fall I plan on doing some deer hunting. Those are the sporting activities I do.

hello, I'm a C5 guad,so there aren't very many sports we can play. The best sport I found that I can really compete in with no limitations is chess, it's not really complicated and with a good chess program you can learn to compete with highly rated players. some people may say it's not a sport, but they did show a match on ESPN which officially makes it a sport :D
it's a small world, but I wouldn't want to have to paint it ;)

That's a good ided, Ben. Mind you, as far as being a sport is concerned, Bridge was tyring to get intothe Olympics, nd they do then Chess certainly should and perhpas even Tiddlywinks!

Are you using a computer program to play? If so which one? There are lots of programs out there but know which works best is quite difficult. I used to play chess with my father but my family won't touch it so the computer would be the best way to get my game up.

well, if you cant play football, play basketball...coz if you cant kick the ball, dribble it...but i guess chess is the best game ever, coz the mind is equal on wheels or not. :D

My husband has a t-2 through T-10 complete SCI and he used to play tennis competatively. His most recent sports interests in the 10 or so years have been hunting and fishing. However, lately his health is not good enough to do either very often. :P

We are hoping that changes soon! Enjoy your games! :D

Just wondering what people with C5/6 quadriplegia have done for holding tennis racquets. Is taping the most common way of holding the racquet or have splints been fabricated for holding purposes?

Thanks

I like shooting darts too, Boozyuzi. What do you like to play 301 or cricket?

I help officiate a yearly local dart tourney here...I don't play in it, but my husband does. I just do the draw and make out the elimination chart...and take their money. :D

I HAVE to have at least two double rums to calm my nerves, or I cant hit anything! :D

I think a recent study showed that poker was rated around the third most watched sporting event... so i guess its a sport. Personally im sick of the poker craze.
Currently the only sport I take part in is handcycling. I live out of town so my options are really limited. Once I move to the coast im going to get into more 'team' sports like rugby and track.

Steve Slade.... thats something I would love to get into...currently live near a private airstrip out in the country so it would be ideal. Me and my brother were thinking of getting a paraglider.... you should post that yahoo address

Prior to the "unknow illness" that caused my SCI, I was a keen road cyclist, racing locally. I got out of rehab 9 months ago and have been playing wheelchair rugby for 6 months. I do some training (aerobic & weights) to help my rugby but thats about it. My family comes first and wheelchair rugby doesn't take up too much time (as opposed to cycling - I used to train and race about 20 hours a week!). I think my wife and five-year-old son much prefer my commitment to my new sport; as an added bonus, weekends are free as rugby is played on a Friday night!

:mfrlol: That is sooo funny, but so true!

I use to be involved with wheelchair curling, but I moved and there is none in this province. I am trying to get involved with wheelchair racing right now (although again, there is none in my province....) Maybe I'll just move....

I'd also like to try skiing this winter, and wheelchair basketball and rugby.... and the list goes on and on.... :P
