Hi. My fiance had a motorcycle in May of 2006 and I am his care attendant. I was just wondering if someone can help with this problem he seems to be having. For some reason no matter what we do he wets the bed almost everynight. He doesn't drink anything at least 2 hours before bed, he caths himself right before we shut the lights off and still has an accident. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a way we can correct this?

DITTO

I care for my husband 24-7 and thats what we do, but then again its what we have to use all the time.
Its not a big deal to do. At least he wouldn't have to worry about it and he'd stay dry.

Is this normal for him? If not, I'd suggest he may have a urinary tract infection. When I get one I have accidents too but normally have no probelms.
Boat racing accident July 2006. Still hoping for some return!

Unfortunatly, bed wetting is par for the course when it comes to SCI....I agree with the others, a condom cath and bed bag is the best option.

How ? I've heard of the condom cath but does that mean that he doesn't do his normal self cath and only has the condom cath? It very may be a urinary tract infection..its so confusing. He'll go like 2 weeks with no accidents, and than all of a sudden it turns into an everyday thing.

Hey jenn,
This is Stick-Tight again. You would only need to use the condom cath. during the night, since thats when hes having the problem. He can still just self cath. during the day.
But I think I too would have him get checked out for a UTI. They can be a problem, and they can be quite often. Good Luck, Stick-Tight

One more thought regarding bed wetting, is too look at what he is drinking before bed. I agree with Trail-Boss about the UTI, but you might consider staying away from caffeinated drinks and alcohol before bed. They can aggravate the situation too. Also, it would help if he began a regimen of taking huge doses of vitamin C to ward off infection on an every-day basis. Are you on anything for bladder spasms...ask your doctor for something? Good Luck.

He actually has severe leg spasms and is on Bacofen for those, when he started taking those thats when the bladder spasms seemed to start. So the doctor prescribed an over active bladder pill but it still seems to happen...Thanks for the tip on Vitamin C maybe him hearing it from someone else he'll actually listen to me now!!! Thank you for all your advice.

I used to take high doses of Vit C for my bladder but heard all it does is increase the acidity of the urine, which doesn't help with infections and adds more "sting" to the urine. Vit C helps the immune system.

I take a Norwegian herbal tea (translates into English as "Horsetail Tea") every day to flush out my bladder and keep any infections under control. If I suspect I have an infection, I take 2 or 3 of these teas per day, for a week or so, and all if fine.

I've recently heard of something called Waterfall D-Mannose (www.waterfall-d-mannose.com) and have bought some, but not given it a full trial run yet, but this is supposed to do the same thing as the tea I take.

If your b/f can feel it when his bladder is full at night, maybe you just need to have something within arms reach that he can use to empty his bladder, without the need to be "hooked up" to a night bag. A condom attached to a night bag maybe, that he can pop on quickly and empty...

My husband had problems with the spasms, He just had a Baclofen pump put in, he is doing alot better since then. Not only does it help with the spasms, it will not shut any movements you may have down. The doc's control the amount of medicine you get with a remote. Talk to you doctor about it.
I tell ya, it was the ticket for us.

The doctor did mention the pump to Joey but he doesn't want anything implanted inside him, and he hates the spasms but at the same time I think the give him hope that maybe one day the nerve signals will make it up the cord...I know, its weird but we're just hopefull people and as much as the spasms hurt and they are annoying I think he likes them because he feels like its making his muscels work. he is on baclofen pill.

We've gotten more movement back with the pump. And again it does not shut the spasms down completely, unless you want to. He would be getting so much less medicine into his body. Dave is not napping anymore. He is so alert and active now. Igot my husband back. The pump goes just under the skin in the front and the tiniest cath. goes up your spine. I guess if I we're you guys, I'd be asking alot more ?'s of your doctor. Good Luck, Stick-Tight.
