Experiment: Gene Transfer of Insulin-like Growth Factor–I provides Neuroprotection after spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injury requires substantial long-term healthcare expenditures. Within minutes of primary injury, a cascade of biochemical events is initiated, leading to secondary cell death that evolves over a period of days to weeks.

Currently, high-dose methylprednisolone administered within 8 hours of injury is the only therapy with recognized benefit. Any new treatment of SCI that allows for major recovery of both functional and molecular levels would be a significant advance.
