Hello,
I am a student in the Experiential Health & Healing Master’s degree program offered by The Graduate Institute, Milford Connecticut. I am also the mother of a spinal cord injured son who was in a diving accident 8 ½ years ago. I am currently conducting research for my Master’s Thesis and would like to invite you to participate in a study to determine the needs of family members of SCI individuals. The research will show what family members need the most and whether or not these needs are currently being met.
Participants should be spouses or significant others, parents, children, or siblings of the SCI individual. All participants should play a primary role in the care of the SCI individual or in providing assistance in meeting that individual’s daily needs. If you meet these criteria, I welcome and encourage you to participate. The study that I am conducting involves answering a 56-question survey and should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. You will have an opportunity to review the results of the research.
For your privacy, all information received from you will be kept confidential as to source, and your identity will not be requested. If you have any concerns or questions, I will make every effort to discuss these with you. Simply email me your concerns and I will respond as soon as possible. You may withdraw your consent and discontinue your participation at any time during the questionnaire for any reason.
By clicking the link below, you attest that you have read and understood this form and that your participation is entirely voluntary. Thank you for your time and effort in participating. It is greatly appreciated.

I was just looking at your survey and noticed that question #14 "Did the staff at the rehabilitation hospital address your needs toward emotional healing?" didn't have an option to answer if the couples weren't together when the spinal cord injury happened. You were assuming that the couples were together when it happened. I was going to send the link to my finace to fill out for you, but we didn't even know each other when I had my sci.
Just thought I'd let you know. Otherwise, it seems like a great surey. Good luck with it.

Yeah, my mom is looking for family members or significant others that were with the SCI individual during the hospital stay. When I was in the hospital, she was very scattered and had no idea what to do. Her son, me, could not walk and she now had to worry about getting me back home, aides, insurance companies, van, sleeping arrangements, etc. She wants to help the families of the patients with coping and getting back to as normal of a life as possible afterwards.

Oh, ok. Sometimes Dr.s and other people working in places like hospitals and rehabs seem to think people know everything they spent years in medical school learning! When I was in the hospital and rehab (for 8 months) I was put on sections with all older people waiting to go to nursing homes or just waiting to die. There was no "special" place for people who had spinal cord injuries. I was even almost forced to go to a nursing home myself! I had just turned 23 at the time. The Dr. I had tried to have papers signed saying I was incompetant to make decisions by myself so she could put me there herself! She knew that I wanted to live on my own again once I got out of rehab, and that because I'm blind and a wheelchair user the only way for me to get around and be independant was to keep my guide dog, but she also tried to have her taken away. It was a complete nightmare! All through the whole process of hospital and rehab I had to not only work hard to get out of there, but to keep any chance of me having any independance and keeping my guide dog, plus I had to fight with everyone there in order to get any help to actually not go to a nursing home. It's a good thing I can be stubborn and am not affraid to fight when I know something's not right!
I think what your mom wants to do is great!

Well, I just showed my mom your reply and she is beside herself. She really knows that this is something that she needs to do. She has gotten a lot of support from the rehab hospitals around here so she needs information to better assist everyone.
