Hello Bracers :crytch: I had a car accident 30 years ago when I was 16 and was hell bent on walking again with or without braces. I went to 2 major rehab. facilities and at one of them - my doctor told me to consider just using the wheelchair and not the braces because of the wear/tear and eventual arthritis. I was furious!!! Well, after 10 years of therapy and trying to ambulate, I gave up and now I understand what the guy was talking about. At 46, I'm up for surgery on both my rotator cuffs and I have lots of joint pain in my shoulders and wrists. This is a combination of using the braces and pushing my manual. It's extremely hard to get ambulatory on braces - I'm glad I tried, but also consider the consequences years from now.

Hi. I was also young when I had my accident. I was hurt at 14 spent the next 10yrs fighting tooth & nail to stay as a "walker" & now I'm 31......and I'm going to pay for my nonexeptance  I had some PT's tell me to just go with the chair and use my legs & forearm crutches (sparingly not the right word but in nutshell) to HELP. Well then this other PT got me to walk with crutches and braces for much longer couple of 1oo yrds. You'd think that this would be a good thing, but now I have severe arthritis and (because of the instability of my back) my discs are shot, they erroded away partly BECAUSE of the funny weird gate I had. I'm probably going to have to have spinal fusion surgery. In the end I would have been better off just excepting the chair and saving myself in the end. I can't/won't tell you not to do it.....just proceed with caution and push but don't shove towards "mobility".
*Enjoy every sunset, but be grateful for every dawn.*
*Wheelchairs are made of a special ocular magnetic alloy......they're "eyeball magnets".*
*I USE a wheelchair, that does NOT make ME a wheelchair!*
