Well I finally decided to get a new chair through the wheelchair voucher scheme. Who'd of thought it would take so long! I phoned my wheelchair service department to apply for the independant option of the scheme. I had to get my GP to do a referral form because I hadn't had an NHS wheelchair for 16 years.
After 4 weeks I've finally received a letter today from my wheelchair service department that they have received the referral and are going to assess which chair they are going to privide me with but it could take another 9 weeks!
No mention of giving me the independant option.
Is this how they normally do things?
I forward to some advice.
Brendan

Huh, I'm in the process of applying for another voucher.
From personal experience I prefer the independant option. The only drawback is that you will have to fund most of the chair yourself. My local Authority is prepared to give me £550 towards a new chair.
A few years ago I opted for the NHS option and it was a bad experience. The wheelchair turned out to be really unsuitable (heavy and cumbersome) plus when I got a puncture they said they'd come and mend it in 10 days time. I returned the chair.
Regarding waiting times for assessments etc, even as an 'active' wheelchair user I've been told the wait is about 4months plus waiting for the chair at the end of that time. But I've argued my point this time that I've been assessed on more than 3 occasions and nothing has changed. I know exactly what I need and want, so they're sending me the form to fill in and send back!!
The best chair I've ever used is my current chair, a Bromakin Street Classic Titanium with Spinergy 2002 Spox black spokes 24" wheels. Its five years old and I use it for about 17 hours a day, sooo comfortable!
and the worst.... a Quickie 2. Like running a marathon in stiletto shoes.
Good luck in finding the right chair!
