I was on a little road trip for my birthday last weekend and on the long drive a friend was complaining of a headache. I don't take any kind of pain killers but for some reason always have them in my bag so I was able to offer them to her. Throughout the trip everyone was playing this game with me to see exactly what I do "NOT" carry around with me. There wasn't much they could come up with, without stretching it of course, that I did not have available. It was humorous but it got me thinking that there are really only 3 things I seem to always carry on my person (aside from cash, cath & ID of course). For me it's dental floss, lip balm and a pocket knife (for protection & other nec situations).

What do you never leave home without??

Just curious, what kind of pocket knife, where do you keep it, and how would you use it for protection? This is something I've considered but aside from the necessary situations (such as opening a bottle of beer), I don't how I would use a knife for protection.

Oh, I bring a pocket bike tool (no knife or bottle opener), a spare tube, and a velcro strap for my legs. (I call the velcro my "get-off-the-ground for free card".)

I carry a standard pocket knife, not sure how else to describe it other than it's a Craftsman 3-blade. I keep it in my bag slung on the back of my chair. My dad gave it to me years ago and I never considered what I would use it for until many years later I had to take a cab ride when my car was in the shop. I rode in a lift van where they strap you down to the floor in your chair. The driver was SO peculiar and began to ask me freaky questions about my sexual preferences. He was creepy and scary and here I was at his mercy, strapped to the floor. It occured to me then that should something happen where I needed to be able to get away, be it crawling or wheeling the knife would cut thru the straps. Since then I've learned a few self defense techniques utilizing my knife. Not only could I stab my attacker but it's a very heavy wood handled knife with brass ends so if I did not have time to open it, it's long enough to poke someone in the eye with or a jab in the ribs etc. I definately need to remember to remove it from my bag at the airport however!! LOL When I am in the city or find myself in a questionable atmosphere I do take it from my bag and keep it in a more ready place, such as my jacket pocket.

Good question...

I mean there are stuff that I just kind of have to bring or else I just might get in big trouble (Driver license and what not)

But if it's something that I don't have to have but I still "need" it here's what I bring:

Shades
Phone
$$

and that's about all I can think of right now I'll add more later :P

Always have my man purse - holds everything I need: money, cards, cellphone, pocket knife, pen and paper, a spoke tightener I never use, a screw I found the other day, and, of course, my diary.

As for the knife, I've never considered it a weapon. It's a versatile tool. If drawn as a weapon I'd most likely end up tipped out of my chair and have my own knife used against me. Not a smart idea.

I carry many of the things mentioned ( except the lip stick) above. But , thinking about it and then looking down at my lap I noticed my everpresent towel.

I carry a small face towel everywhere I go. I don't even think about it unless I don't have it.

There is simply no way of telling what you will have to roll through or over in the course of a day, and I like to know I have something to clean my hands with, just in case.

It's also handy for buffets. Helps balance the plate and can help secure the beverage on the way back to the table.

It's also handy for shooing flies and teaseing the cat

Oh, dear. *empties purse* (manbag, whatever.)

Wallet, caths, lube, baby wipes (they're ADULT wipes!! :D ), PDA, small notebook, pen, couple alcohol wipes, business card holder, travel toilet seat covers, epipen, bandana, ziplock bags, spare pair of underwear, energy bar, non-Rx pain meds, Rx pain meds, iPod (including cable and power adapter), headphones, swiss army knife (it has pliers!), digital camera, Tums, lip balm, a couple of charms, Biohazard bag I got from my hospital room at discharge, cellphone, lighter...that's the purse.

I carry a single-blade (half serrated, half straight) pocket knife that clips inside my pocket.

I usually take my own car, which has rain coat, flashlight, sunglasses, trekking poles, spare cane, coffee cup, pair of chopsticks, [usually] change of clothes...I think that's about it.

You know, just a few things here and there. :poo:

a knife is always on me, except when I'm sleeping. Thank the boy scouts for that one. It is a cutting tool, potential self defense, makshift screwdriver, I've used it for prying stuff open, a carving and scraping tool for my pottery class, and I've even used it as a toothpick.

I managed to pare down the amount of stuff I carry considerably recently. Drat that boyscout motto "be prepared"...sometimes it's so hard to balance between being prepared and packing light!

Hmm, now, this depends on a lot of things.

To work? Crutch (well duh) My bottle of water and my Cell as I am a TEXT DEMON oh and YAHOO MOBILE!

Around Town? Damn Crutch, Water, Cell Phone, Car keys (I can't get around without the keys, tho I can hotwire) A lil lion thingy that zips and that hooks to the car keys and holds ID/ATM card/AAA Membership card and lip gloss, and if I am going down town, well nevermind the change is ALWAYS in the lil center console of the car, for parking meters. And the Sirius Satallite better be working!

A long distance trip? My Cell, the damn crutches, I take both I have nearly killed myself trying without both... Oh and clothing (well kinda depends on who I am going to see *evil laugh* as to how much clothing or how little) ID, etc, my laptop, CD Player, I steal my sons' Nano Ipod thingy, and Misty if I am driving, it goes in check in baggage if flying. For those not on myspace or my diary page, Misty is my 9mm... ( a fav quote from a weird movie, Play Misty for me- no one ever gets it *cries*) No single female travelling across any great length of distance, old beater car or new car, should be weaponless. Thats just my thoughts, based on life experiences, nevermind the news on a nearly weekly basis it seems. Before I was licenced, I had this HUGE Wrench, damn near length of my arm, just under the seat, I will beat the person to death... keep in mind car jackings were popular in LA a few years back.... Oh and if I plan on renting a car when I get where I am going, I take my Sirius with me, cause I am soooooooo not into commercials and I am spoiled by my BBC radio and my 70s station!!!!!!!!!!

Of all the words, of tongue or pen, the saddest, are these: "what might have been".
