I have had my assessment and passed for driving with handcontrols. Looking for a car at the moment.

Question: at petrol stations when it is 'Pay at pump' I will be able to fill up myself, but if it is not, what do I have to do to get some help? I can walk on crutches, but I don't want to walk into the shop as I fear the slightest knock or bump from someone will send me flying as my balance is still very bad.

Would really appreciate any advice. Thanks

hi angela

what i do is stop at the pump and show my blue badge to the assistant through the windowscreen, have always found the supermarket petrol stations to be very helpful, even with the chip and pin

i am lucky as i live in a smal town and my local garage know me so always come out to help

happy driving when you find the right car and enjoy your independance

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the reply. I already have my blue badge so I will do that. I just hope the petrolstations here in London are just as accommodating.

Can I just ask are you walking and how long has it been since your injury? If you don't feel you can answer that's ok.

Angela

Hi Angela

For all my local driving I use one petrol station only, got to know them and after a few visits they automatically come out.

I'd suggest the same for you, so much better than sitting in your car, maybe tooting your horn and flashing your blue badge the says 'look at me everybody i'm disabled' OK when you are stuck but not much fun if you have to do it week in week out.

I'd say explain your situation and make one possible two your local.

Hi Angela,

I notice you live in the UK - there is a system called 'service call' where you can buy a remote handset that alerts petrol station staff to your arrival - not all petrol stations have this facility but a lot of supermarket stations do - most Tesco stores have them, and most motorway services have them. When you press the button on your handset it sets off an alarm in the petrol station office and the staff should come out to you. I have one - I don't use it all the time as my husband tends to 'fill up' for me, but when I need to go on long journeys by myself I find it invaluable.

Anyway here is the website address:

http://www.service-call.net/

Good luck and happy motoring !!!

Hi there everyone,
I would love to find out if we have one of those service call things for the petrol stations here in oz I have saved that web address that was posted. My partner is a quad and he drives, I know in the past when he has travelled long distances sometimes he can call ahead to the station to let them know, other times he toots to get the attention of staff (this one however would cause a few onlookers lol) and other times I fill up for him. Perhaps a short toot and showing your blue badge would work a treat? Great to see you are getting out and about!!! Best of luck xx
Life is to short so make the most it while you can!!! And by the way smile, it makes everyone wonder what you have been up to lol
