Surely there must be a care agency in your area that does take on people with spinal injury’s, we have two clients on our books at the agency where I work with SCI here in Coventry . Care is care at the end of the day and I find it hard to believe there’s not an a agency to support you . Where is your present carer from? You need to speak with Social Services where they can put you in touch with a social worker to put the feelers out on your behalf. You mention direct payments …yes this is an option maybe advertise privately ( be careful to check these people carefully) if you do and get references. Maybe when you get sorted your carer you have now can work along side the new recruit so she /he knows exactly what is required. You could always give Penderals Trust a ring, they are a registered charity that provide a range of Services to enable people who qualify for direct payments to find a carer…hope this helps a bit.
Good Luck.

They are based in Lancaster, but are a specialist spinal injury care agency who train and employ carers (from all over the world male and female) and then send them wherever they are needed for however long.
My boyfriend used them a few times before i became his carer, and on the whole they were good, you get sent like a CV with details of the carers on, like where they are from, their interests, previous work experience, age, height, weight, smoker, alergies etc on etc, and can request specific things, ie people able to drive etc.
you can book them for whenever you need them, and im sure there is a back up service in case of emergency (although you would have to check this!)
check out their site or give them a call and see what they can do for you, the guy who runs/owns the company is a tetra, so knows what life is like and gears the course the carers go on specifically to SCI!!!
good luck!!

I will follow up on the ideas and numbers given, i have also wrote to my care manager who runs Direct payments.
The local people i have contacted so far, carnt cover the needs of a spinal patient, even though we could train them, they arnt coverd in their job to do it.
As they say in trek land, The search goes on....
Thanks all, keep good.

Hi Kiwiquad, the last time my boyfriend used them, which was April 2005, so their fees may have changed slightly, but they were:
standard days@ £108 (per day)
Bank holidays@ £162 (per day)
christmas and new year overtime@ £195 (per day)
Your direct payments should cover this, as if you are registered as needing a full time live in carer, then they should pay whatever the amount the care agency are charging!
Let us know if we can be of anymore help, and if you do decide to use them, let us know who will be comming to you, and if we had them we can give you the low down on them from the clients point of view!
good luck
