Some of you knwo I run a program called Wheeling Angels. It pairs children with spinal cord injuries with adult volunteers that send them small gifts, letters, and cards weekly. It is just meant to put a smile on the childrens faces and to give them some extra support. The program has been great!
My little buddy is an 8 year old girl that was in a car accident and has a L2-L3 injury. She is a paraplegic but my question is with that level injury is there usually recovery? It is more possible then with a T level or C level injury correct? I may be totally wrong ont his as I am just learning.
For those of you that know about my friend that was shot and paralyzed things are pretty mcuh the same with her. She is still in rehab and on the ventilator part time :-( Thank you for all your support!

Hi, My son is 6 his injury occured when he was 5 months old at C6 to T4. At first he could barely hold his head up, now he commando crawls, plays video games, and chases his brother with his power chair. He has limited use of his left arm and no feeling in his left hand but has come so far and regained more that we thought he would. The great thing about kids is they don't seem to worry so much about what they have lost as they do about adapting to get what they want. Matt has learned to steer his racing games with his mouth while pushing the buttons with his right hand, no one had to teach him, he wanted it so he learned. Your buddy will do the same. She has a friend who will encourage her. Keep up the great work!

That sounds like a neat program. On the spine thing...... the where makes a difference in how much of your body is effected. Generally from the problem/injury down. If you had an injury to the lumbar it's just the legs and abdominal area vs. a T that may have a person as a quad with quite a bit of hand arm movement. If she ever walks would be if her injury is a complete or incomplete injury. My self I had a compression fracture of L-2. It did NOT sever the cord only damaged it so I still have a lot of function left. I use forearm crutches for VERY short distances.....and have been likened to a baby giraffe (it became a nickname for me
). Everyones injury is different and no two people will recover exactly the same. Thanks for keeping us posted on your officer friend. I hope she'll be covered for medical and personal care giving services by her pension and the department's disability funds. Keep on keeping us posted.....and maybe we'll get to hear from her directly some day.

This sounds like a great program, where are you located? I would love to volunteer in any case.

Please tell me more about this programme. It is a good idea and sounds great!
I work in a rehab unit and we have a fair number of children coming through the programme. Is there anyway you could extend the programme to south africa? my email is tarryn.ob@gmail.com I would love to find out more!

how do we get our kids involved in your prgm? my daughter is a paraplegic she is not 18 months and was diagnosed at 4 months with cancer compressing her spine from about t11-L3. she could not sit up or roll back then and now she just started taking steps about a month ago with a walker!!!!
we are supposed to start an intense therapy program at Kennedy krieger Institute but just found out she has subluxated hip 80% and one dr says its fine to go ahead with all therapy and another dr just told us she must wear the hip brace at ALL times thereby majorly limiting her therapy and possibly which could end up preventing regaining of her movement! any thoughts!!!!
