Sorry, was never into sports as an able bodied person and cannot get into them as a disabled person.

Have to say that whilst I applaud what these guys/gals do, I just do not get the same thrill out of watching paralympian sports as I do out of able bodied.

The EXCEPTION to that is I just love watchign the guy the call "Bladerunner" who runs on the two "J" shaped aritifcial legs. Now that IS good to watch. A disabled taking on an able bodied runner. Brill.
ALWAYS REMEMBER - The darkest hour is only 60 minutes long and what won't kill you will make you stronger.

cauda equina lesion resulting in lack of ability to walk. Spinal cord undamaged and intact. NOW ABLE TO HOBBLE AROUND ON 2 STICKS AFTER LOADS OF PHYSIO.

I'm with you Gary - though I did used to enjoy sports at school I hadn't done any for years pre-injury, so I don't wish to start now.

The only way to be good at it is to put in the time and practice. Find one that you truely enjoy and putting in the time is something you will look foward to and not dread and things will fall in place. They say that out of all things that can be taugh, passion for a sport is not one of them and it will push you ahead of the other players that dont have passion for theirs.

That being said. My sport is Sled (Sledge) Hockey all the way baby!

*Yeah I know this thread is a year old but with the summer olympics comming up and seeing as it was already revived anyways I thought I would hop on board.

Yea this will be the first year I'll know some one going to China, so it seems more real this year. I've started playing both tennis and basketball over the last few months and loving them both. I wish I would have started playing when i was a few years younger but o well, i still have the goal to make it to London in 2012.

I would really like to become involved in some sport or other, but I have no ides where to find a place to start. Does anyone know if there is a place where you can go try out different sports or how to find something suitable in my area. I am 47 years old and fairly unfit. I also need to use oxygen some of the time and this seems to be a real obstacle. Any info gratefully recieved. Jillykins

Hi Jilly
Welcome!
Where are you from, if you fill it out in you're profile you will perhaps get advise that is more relevent to your location!
Needing oxygen means that some of the faster more high powered sports are out but have you considered more sedantry sports such as shooting or archery?

Yes as mentioned above if you fill out where you are located that would be a help. There are organizations in most areas that have sports clinics you can go to and give them a try. Letting us know where you are located someone on here should have an idea of one in your area. They generally only come around something like 1-2 times a year but give you plenty of notice (at least in my state)

Yes there are. What are your interests? Are you complete or incomplete and how much function do you have?

Not sure what your interests are but... you have the ever popular Quad Rugby.

Then the things that I enjoy can all be done by someone with your level injury
- Fishing
- Hunting
- Sledge Hockey
- Cycling / Running -- Handcycles are an option as well as the type that I have which is most commonly referred to as a track bike (shown in my signature).

What did you enjoy doing as an AB? That might help people give ideas on what is out there for you now still.

There are athletic sports for quads but most are won by incompletes with trunk function... not very fair but hard to stop.

Sailing is probably the best as the "Skud 18" Class (designed here in Melbourne Australia) is the fastest and most challenging yachting class but requirs one Quad Level One, like you and a high para or amp with one of them being female too. Means that female quads have great oportunities to be skipper of a racing yacht doing 14 knots or about 14 mph or 22 kph - which is faster than the two other classes. However, as long as there is a high level disability and a femal on the team, you should qualify.

I'm involved with the governing body of sailing (and I used to compete internationally, assisted with the Skud design, and am a complete C6 too) - IFDS International Association of Disabled Sailing who run the Paralympic and Worlds Championships in Sailing.

If you are interested in trying sailing, contact your countries Sailability Club or organisation.

I joined the Turning Point Nation ( www.turningpointnation.org ) Air rifle try outs..competition isnt till the 13th... But Im finding that I enjoy shooting just as much as I did pre injury, takes a little practice to find your balance with a big rifle to hold out in front of you, but it can be done... I even went out and bought a competition gun to practice with out behind the house.. its been filling in many hours of boredom, Im loving it!

Me and Texaswheelz will be representing Dallas in the paralympics to come!!!

I would love to try tennis and basketball. I have never played tennis but I loved B-ball when I was AB. I also played a LOT of volleyball. I see it on YouTube but it mostly looks like amputees. I can't see a paraplegic moving across the floor that quick. Am I wrong?

I was going to head out to try that out. Haven't shot a gun in years, but grew up in the country carrying around a .22 shooting squirrels and rabbits from about the age of 8-15. Was going to go to the 2 training things Turning point is having.

Also if you haven't ran across Rise Adventures here in DFW area you should check em out. They actually have more going on then Turning Point. I just ran into a guy that works for them a few months ago at our shop. Gonna try to start getting out and trying some of the other stuff they do: Kayaking, cycling, scuba, sled hockey...

Handguns are way difficult to adjust too post injury.. I tried a few different models, the lighter ones are pretty easy.. and you can def do it one handed, just takes some practice.

Yeah turning point had to reschedule last practices so they are still to come,, you guys should come out. Nothing to lose, n its worth a shot right?
If you do come, keep in mind the bathrooms are up a massive unaccessible (unless someone pushes you up) hill so pee first!

Im having trouble with the stocks tho, they are all too long for me, unless I get into a kiddie rifle. Thinking bout dropping some cash on a nice adjustable piece. Its nice to have an outdoor hobby again.

I used to do some shooting and used to go to a range now and again, i've got a BSA air rifle with multishot with a good Hawke scope. Only used it a couple of times since SCI, balance holding the rifle out infront of me is crap now lol, laying down no problemo. The accuracy of it though is amazing, say you were going to shoot a bird lol you could shoot it in the eye about 50 yrds away. Not many good places around here to use it so its gathering dust, was good fun though back in the day.

I found the easiest way to hold the rifle is to set your chair at 2 O'clock.. and slouch just a little..
I guess if youre a left eye shooter youd wanna go 10 O'clock.. either way it helps give the steady shot you knew pre injury. I cant do straight on unless theres a stand, or even a table to lean on.

I will have to try that. I shoot off a table with a bipod my ar15 has a little to much kick and to heavy to hold and shoot.
