If you're running Window's XP, I've found the speech toolbar works fairly well, even with a cheap microphone. I've also used IBM Via Voice which also works very well and comes with a headset microphone.
Success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life, as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.

I also have Dragon Naturally Speaking. I only use it for long emails, and school assignments. Otherwise its a splint and pencil.

Hi, rjourney. Has your friend tried voice-over-IP? Basically, phone over the internet. A program like Skype lets you call from your computer to any phone, in the world, for fewer cents per minute than a regular cell phone. And the sound is just as good as a regular cell.

If the voice command software can take over other software applications such as Skype, then he's set, and he should be able to dial any number he wants, save them into a contact list, then dial them again later with a virtual double-click. So as long as he can get full control over the PC, then the PC can handle the telephone calls as well...

Vista comes with it's own version of voice activation. My son says it's very good. Need good microphone and speakers (headphones).
