I'm back from my week in Finland. I had been there twice pre-injury, my bestfriend lives there and I knew I'd love it whatever the accessibility conditions.

I flew with Finnair: sat on my wheelchair till the entrance of the plane, took my wheels as handluggage, and left the remained of my closed-up, rigid-wheelchair with a big FRAGILE sign on it. Got it back as I exited the plane, with no damage, both ways (Pisa-Helsinki-Pisa)!

I remembered that they were redoing streets and sidewalks of Helsinki city-center when I had been there 4-5 years ago, so my hopes were high...

I was let down big time; my biggest enemy was everywhere!!!

I understand that they may be pretty to look at, but for me they are just a pain in the a$$! Especially if it seems like they have forgotten to put grouting in!

Other than the cobblestones and rather slanted sidewalks, the city of Helsinki is great!
Loads of shopping centers (with accessible toilets), ramps/lifts most places (if you can't find it, ask!), and loads of things to do/see!

I was only in Helsinki for 3 days as I spent the first 4 days of my stay in the beautiful finnish archipelago, at my friends summer house! Can't wait to go back, even to Helsinki!

btw: a week is not a long enough stay!

Only positive side on those is that you learn how to do a wheelie pretty fast ;) but if you want to see some real paininthe*** cobblestones you should visit the old fortress "Suomenlinna" just a few miles the coastline of Helsinki
