Hi, I'm here looking for a bit of advice.... I'm trying to plan a holiday for a friend who is in a wheelchair. I'd like it to be a surprise, so obviously I have to be super careful about getting somewhere that is genuinely wheelchair friendly.

Ideally I'd like to go somewhere hot and sunny in Europe, I'm thinking Portgual or Spain, but open to ideas. However, I don't really know where to start with finding accommodation and I get the impression that a lot of places are unreliable even if the description states "wheelchair friendly".

Can anyone give me some good tips for websites, where to start?

Many thanks

Check out www.accessiblebarcelona.com, Barcelona is a wonderful city to visit and this website gives you details of accommodation, transport and places to see etc, the website is run by a disabled Brit who now lives in Barcelona.

yeah... barca is great when it comes to accessibility. also tenerife.

if all you need is quite basic accessibility you will go cheaper then with full facilities. a tricky bit i often use when it comes to booking hotel/apartment is to politely ask them take a few photos and measures and send me back. sure, i pay it extra. but even a small tip goes the long way in hospitality/tourism branch.

Hi

There is a fantastic company for helping out with this and they are call Accessible Travel, have a look at them and their holidays online.

I would suggest you book your accommodation with them, but your flights seperatly, as they are only a smallish company, they can not always offer the cheapest flights, and they openly tell you that themselves.

They come highly recommended from me, we have used them twice now. They only deal with these kind of holidays, but you are still staying in mainstream accommodation.

If you want any more info, let me know.

Hi Roo

I have just had a look at your web site, and your villa's look great. I can honestly say I have never considered Hungary before, but it all sounds lovely. We have just returned from a holiday but I have saved it in my favourites to keep in mind for future holidays.

What a lovely place to live!!

Take care

Hi Susan,
We run a business finding accessible holidays for people. Having arranged holidays for residential centres for 17 years before this venture, we know how difficult, time consuming and downright frustrating it can be to get the information you need. If you tell us your criteria and a bit about your preferred 'style' of holiday we can search for you worldwide. We'll e-mail you a 'minibrochure' based on your requests.
There are several companies already mentioned here who do a grand job but who are largely limited to the Mediterranean and Canaries regions. We will take on the task of searching anywhere, resorts or city breaks, UK or Worldwide. We take the time to obtain information, measurements and photos and add what we find to our ever-growing database. Eventually we hope to be able to post this database for booking through our site. Holidays With Access
In the meantime, all you need to do is check out our fledgling site and give us a call or e-mail with your details so we can get searching for you.
We can also arrange flights.
We can seek out equipment hire and airport transfers as well.
If you or your friend would like to be updated on new finds, let us know.

To anyone else out there who knows of great places to stay, please post your information and any websites HERE or let us know and we can make our database grow even faster. Our customers certainly will benefit from a greater choice and sharing information on accessible venues gives everyone a chance to get a great holiday.

Hello Susan,

Maybe this is an good suggestion as well.

I have been to Canet en Rousillon, South of France in Spring 2007. There is a beautifull wheelchair accessible apartment just 500m from the beach and all the shops and restaurants you want. Canet is just 50 km away from the Spanish border.

Canet is really wheelchair friendly. They even have an accessible boulevard and beach (see picture below) Everywhere slopes to the sidewalks and accessible public toilets. The beach guards lent you a beach wheelchair as well to go into the water. I have never been into the sea in my life. I tried this and I really enjoyed the feeling of the tide.

You can fly in to Perpignan, Rivesaltes Airport, France or with Ryanair to Gerona in Spain. Rivesaltes airport is only 18 km from the apartment. Once you have arrived in Canet Plage you don't need a car. Everything is in walking / rolling distance. And since the surroundings are very flat not very heavy to roll or push.

Aids are available at the apartment or can be hired at the local pharmacy. And wheelchair accessible cabs are available too.

Do you want to know more? Take a look at this link.
It belongs to a Dutch guy who is in a wheelchair due to a muscular atrophy since childhood.

In case you have questions, email me. I always answer.

Regards, Joanna
