OK, simple job here, where do you get your tyres and what sort of tyres do you use. There must be somethign out there better than the grey slicks that come with the Quickie Ti.

Oh, and I have to get 26 x 1 (25 x 590) which seems to be an awkward size.

Thanks for any help of course.

Can't help with the particular tyres you are after - but I always go back to my wheelchair supplier for fresh tyres.

590's are pretty much wheelchair specific so you have to go to the normal wheelchair suppliers. I'd order them from sportaid and pay the shipping - still cheaper than the UK wheelchair suppliers.

Thanks for that, Russ. Do you have any views on the brand etc? I've been using Wheelchair service chairs for quite a long time before splashing on the Titanium so haven't been buying tyres. There seems to be a bit too much choice too.

The ones that I've always used are Primo tyres for my Quickie GPS. They are high pressure tyres, rated to 100 PSI iirc, with a grey tread, if you can call it that, and a black sidewall which can get your thumbs dirty. The tread on them is minimal, more what you'ld call textured really.

Never had a problem with them but they do puncture very easily when it comes close to them needing changing as they get very thin.

I get mine from my wheelchair supplier EPC.

I used to use fairly cheap tyres, I think they were Kenda brand, but they had very shallow "tread" to start with and soon became smooth making me fear punctures. I have now changed to the "Marathon Plus" tyres from Schwalbe. These have better (for me) tread and have a puncture resist layer under the tread. They also allow pressures up to 145 psi for lower rolling resistance, and the have a smooth sidewall so I don't get sores on the edge of my thumbs where the raised lettering on the previous tyres used to rub.

The only problem is they are more than twice the price of the cheaper tyres, but I did find a cheaper source via a company in Germany advertising on Ebay. Even at the higher price, I wouldn't now use anything else.

I use 25" tyres on my main chair so use bike tyres on them but as you're stuck with wheelchair tyres then schwalbe are probably your best bet. They certainly have a good choice of style, I'd not want treaded tyres as my main tyres personally YMMV.

the tyres on my last chair were schwalbe marathon plus as above and they served their purpose with abundance. I found that they sluipped a bit going up curbs in the wet thuogh when up to full pressure.

Hey, 590s used to be a standard size for cyclocross tires so you can get bicycle tires if you want althought they are harder to find. I have Kenda Cross tires on my 590s and they are a great tire. The tread pattern is almost the same as the Kenda Knobby sold on Sportaid for 590s but they are a lower pressure tire and are softer rubber so you get better traction and they are far superior to the ones made specifically for wheelchairs. I got my from Niagra Cycle but last time I checked they were out of stock. Do a quick search on Amazon.com for "Kenda Cross" and you can find them. Here is a pic of what they look like.

I can only add mypraise for schwalbe tyres. As a quad I probably don't do half the 'milage' you do but i've had a pair or black'n'roll marathon plus's on for a year and hardly touched the tread, where as in the same period would have gone down to the innertube in the standard grey primo wheelchair tyres i used to got initially.

Hi everyone - I have read this thread recently and thought as I need some new tyres and inner tubes I would try the schwalbe brand, maybe the marathon plus, as people on here seem to rate them. I currently use Kenda, but I agree with one of the previous posts that they wear down pretty quickly and are then prone to punctures. However, I have 24" spinergy spox wheels and current tyres are 24"x1" (23-540). My problem is I have looked on quite a few sites but all the 24x1" tyres are 25-540, not 23-540 -----I am assuming they are not interchangable, but I am a girl - what do I know about tyres??

:) Can anyone throw any light on this for me? There must be loads of you out there who buy this size tyre - where from?

All advice much appreciated.

I'm a girl too and actually do know about tires  You dont necessarily have to have the same tire width (23, 35, etc) but you do have to have the correct beadset (540). The tire width you can go a bit larger or smaller on accordingly. For example I have some 540 wheels that I have used 37 - 52 wide tires on. My everyday tires are high pressure clinchers and I use 25 but I have used 20 on this same chair.

Check out this page http://sheldonbrown....ire-sizing.html and if you scroll to the bottom you will see a chart in green & red that shows combatibility of widths. I use to be a cyclist so I am pretty familiar on the different widths and personally have no problem pushing wider or narrower than the chart shows but it can require some finessing if you get much beyond what is shown on the chart.

Thanks gsp23 - didn't expect such a quick reply. Guess I'll just buy some of the 25-540's then.

Oh and sorry for letting the girls side down with my complete lack of tyre knowledge :)
