Hi Erin. I can understand your frustration. Tha only thing I can think of is that when you are lying down you are somehow kinking or trapping your catheter so that it is not draining into the bag, instead you get backflow leakage. Is it possible this might be the cause?

Thanks so much but I am not sure it is not kinked. I switched to a bigger cathater I thought maybe this had to do something with it. But I don't know. Thanks again... :)

the tubing being kinked was my first thought as well. If you're sure that is not the cause is there a hole in the tubing? Do you have the right size cath in? Do you maybe have the tubing in a way that the urine has to flow upstream, so it just flows back and bypasses? Those are my only thoughts...

Hello Erin,

I have had an in dwelling catheter for 25 years. If you have ruled out the possibility that the catheter may be kinked, there is the possibility that you may have a urinary tract infection and/or your bladder may be spasm in of a night-time. This may be worth checking out? I was not even aware that my bladder could spasm until recently when I was bypassing my catheter also. I am on a drug called oxybutynin (ditropan) morning and night to keep my bladder flexible. My doctor just increase the oxybutynin and it stopped the bladder spasms. The latter were occurring because my body and bladder were recovering from a nasty UTI.

I hope this helps?

Thanks for the help.I get constant Uti's. The cathater I had in was a 18fr. My doctor to try a different size. So he told me to try a 20fr. I am not sure if that makes a difference or not. Thanks again for the help.. Erin

Erin, a couple of things not mentioned.
  • Have you been given any medicine to control bladder spasms? I get detrunorm. I just wonder whether the bladder might be more likely to have small spasms which would allow leakage.

  • The other thought, since you mention infections, is why not see if you can try a supra-pubic catheter (one inserted through the abdominal wall in a small op) These seem to have a much lower rate of infection - nil in my case after some years and have the advantage of leaving the sphincters closed.
Why not try a combination of these - could well improve your life.
