I'm a quad & had the bone fusion
on my neck in the 90's when I broke it.

Well it's started popping & loud all the time.

Should I be worried?

I've been a quad since Oct. 4, '04. I don't have a bone fusion or anything, but I've noticed in the past 8 months or so that every time I move my whole spine seems to "crack and pop", and when I turn my neck it "pops" quite a bit. I thought it's just because I don't move as much as I use to and it's just a lot more noticable now because it's happening more often. I remember learning in school that the "popping" sound is caused when nitrogen gas is released when negative pressure is applied to a joint and it's quite normal.

even though it could be the nitrogen gas release, id still get a neck X-Ray done to check that nothing is snapping out of place, tell them to take an odontoid displacement series flexion and extension. and a plain rear view X-Ray

the odontoid displacment one will allow them to view the very high vertibra with better clarity.

heh heh i know my X-Rays pretty well, i just got that series to check if my kyphosis or scoliosis have gone cervical too, i have both cervical scoliosis and kyphoscoliosis across the rest of my back end.

My neck pops all the time. Scared the bajeebies out of me the first time it happened after the repair job. I just had a whole bunch of neck xrays done to make sure the fusion and neck has healed, so I figure don't worry about it unless it hurts!

still if they havn't taken a recent X-Ray series id get it done, its a simple low cost low time test that can tell a lot about whats going on...

Mine were taken before my last appt, on July 30th. I don't see the nuerosurgeon again until the end of January, but you're right, could'nt hurt to tell him about it and see if he wants more pictures.

I recall quite a few years ago having a slightly clicky neck. on arriving in physiotherapy I was told that something in the neck, can get misplaced. (Sorry the memory's not that good.) I think the treatment was more like a chiropractic as the physio moved my neck round in out direction and then the other a few times and , holding my shoulders, whipped it round with a loud click noise. that was it.

She had restored movement to my neck; I could turn it further round and it was noiseless. I just hear a bit of grating some times but suspect that is old age creeping on. So, I suggest getting off to the doctor and getting checked out. It might be 5 min job by the physio

Thanks for your comments.

I think I will call my Dr. and get ck'd out.

Thanks for the names of the xrays I should have.
I will talk to him about your suggestions.

I'm too scared of getting my neck popped.
It might break worse.

sorry, I had a moment of flashbacks had to laugh, it freaked the hell out of me the first time it happened. it was about 4 hrs after my lapenectomy C3-C6 and as soon as I got out of recovery, they finally fed me,I took my first bite and I heard this loud pop, I layed there scared as hell not moving until the nurse came back and told me that it was okay. I end up bending my head (ear to shoulder) to streach my neck and upper back and my neck is always popping. I told my doctor about it and she spazzed I think she thought I was twisting it. sorry I'm not much help.
